Suggested Destination

My Wife and I are planning a trip to Europe and we both haven't been to Switzerland before. We'd like to hear your suggestions on which city or town we should choose as our Switzerland destination. We'll only be able to spend 1 or 2 nights there because we will be short on days due to the fact that our ultimate destination is Prague. We're looking for beautiful landscape and history. A bustling city is not what we're wanting. Your knowledge and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Luzern, Luzern, Luzern.

I am not even a big fan of Switzerland (seems so expensive to me) - - but even I think that Luzern is very nice. And world unique, in a way that seems to be up there with Venice. There are other "little towns" - - but an actual (moderate-sized) city in that kind of uniquely beautiful geography? What other place rivals this?

Best wishes,

Rex

What about Basel? We have relatives in Breitenbach & Meltingen (15-20 miles from Basel). My brother & wife (from US) went there last year & raved about the beauty.

I have to agree with Rex. I don't know about your travel mode or itinerary Switzerland - Prague, but Lucerne is not far from Zurich Airport and offers everything you are looking for.

Spend most of the day outside Luzern (day trip up to Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi, both excellent) and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You will have enough time to stroll through the city admiring the beautiful old town during late afternoon/evening.

Another vote for Luzern. It's an ideal location for a short trip. As an added bonus, you can reach Engelberg via train in an hour from Luzern. Engelberg is an alpine resort and will give you a nice big dose of that wonderful Swiss scenery.

Have fun.

yet another vote for luzern--beautiful scenery, really cool altstadt with well preserved medieval fortifications & covered bridges, good shopping, variety of food options and interesting things to see (e.g., Transport Museum, MT Pilatus, Bourbaki Panorama)and do (boat ride--for a stitch, try the night boat with yodeling, traditional Swiss costumes & dancing and Alpenhorn blowing lessons. It's klitchy but fun.
