my daughter recently got accepted to American University of Paris for spring 2008 semester abroad. I have been trying to find an apartment for her in paris, but cannot decide whether the 7th arrondisement would be more suitalbe or the 5th and 6th. From what I understand, 7th is a residential district, which is often quiet at night, whereas the 5th and the 6th is more populated by students. any suggestions?
also as far as leasing an apartment, I have checked several sites such as parisstay, nyuhabitat, and cite universite. Does anyone know if cite universite houses students from other universities?
any other websites for apartment rental?
We will be leaving for Paris in less than a week- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
any suggesitons for hotels in the 7th arrondisment?
a message to fodorite Intex- I was reading the message you posted on august 25th in regards to your daughter's travel to paris. I was amazed hou similar our situation is , with the exception that my daughter just got accepted to a school in paris. I am desperate to find a suitable apartment for her. Like you, I have a son currently at USC, and I find myself more concerned for my daughter's situation in apris than my son at USC's south east la apartment! now I am not implying that Paris is more dangerous , not at all . but I guess being so far away, you want to make sure that they are staying in a safe area. I am curious as to the outcome of your daughter's housing situation . Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hi
Firstly, congratulations on your daughter's enrolment.
I think we need more info to help you.
1. I assume you are accompanying your daughter so you'll need a hotel to settle her in. So you want a hotel in the 7th but what is your budget? We stayed at the Royal Phare - http://www.hotel-royalphare-paris.com - which was quite adequate but maybe a little barebone for some. Around the corner was the Prince Hotel - http://www.hotel-paris-prince.com. Had a quick look and it seemed OK. Again these are 2 star establishments but you may well want something more.
2. Need more info re an apartment for your daughter. What is your budget (in euro)? Is she sharing or living on her own? How long for i.e what does spring 2008 semester equate to in weeks/months? Is something like this on your mind - http://studio.provaction.com/paris/rendezvousuk2.html#. Or after July 2008 this one is available - http://www.christoph-grandt.com/paris.html
3. How central does her accommodation have to be?
Good luck in any event - you must both be very excited

worldinabag -thank you so much for your input. checked the website rendez-vous chariming studio but it is in the Marais district. I am not familiar with Marais . But somehow I prefer If she were in the 5th or 6th and commute to 7th.
Do you know if the 7th is safer for students at night or the 6th and 5th?
She will be staying in paris from Jan 2008 until may 2008
looking for a two bedroom apartment she will be sharing the apartment with another person. they each want their own room budget is around 2500 to 3000 euro I would like it to be less but looking at web-sites for two bedroom at this time of the year , you can't find anything cheaper.
as far as hotels , my preference is to stay in the 7th, because it is close to american university of paris for orientation purposes.
have you heard of hotel bosquet or hotel la tour marbourg?
again thank you so much for responding i need all the advice i can get.

yes, the Cite Universitaire will house students at any school, if they have room. Their website explains it all and how to apply. www.ciup.fr
I wouldn't want to bet on how you can do that at literally the last minute, in mid-year, doesn't sound very likely to me.
Those statements are pretty broad o say that 7th is residential often quiet at night, but 5th and 6th has more students. They live in residential areas, also, and the 7th has lots of "non-residential" buildings, such as UNESCO, embassies, etc. I think a lot of students live in cheaper areas as the 6th is very expensive (where did you hear that lots of students live there?). I believe AUP is in the 7th, though, so maybe it wouldn't be too far away but I don't think looking for an apt. there for a student is such a great idea -- unless you are dripping in cash.
The students I know in Paris live in cheaper areas, rooming houses, and often way out, or they live in foyers, share apts. or live in student housing.
