Strasbourg-Du Dragon or Hotel de l'Europe?
We will be staying a weekend in Strasbourg (one of the days my birthday) and have narrowed our hotel choice to either Du Dragon or Hotel de l'Europe. The problem is they both look great and offer the same price! Which one is more in the heart of it all? Which one would you choose?

Have not used either one but based on location I would choose Hotel de l'Europe since it is in Petite France area, which is the heart of old Strasbourg and it is close to Place Kleber, the main square. Strasbourg is wonderful. You will enjoy. Be sure to try a Tart Flambe while there, very good. A good place for a cheap meal is called Rondel, a cafeteria like place but quite good. It is right in center city as well. For good Alsatian food try La Maison Kammerzell. It is located on the main square and is very good. Try the Choucroute for a real treat.

I stayed in Hotel de l'Europe and liked it very much in every way, so I'd pick it. They are both probably fine, I'm sure. I think I like the location of Hotel de l'Europe better because the Dragon is on the other side of the river away from the central city, so farther to walk to some things. It's not a huge difference and depends what you want to do -- I wanted to be between the train station and the cathedral because I had no car and was doing day trips by train. Having been in Strasbourg, I just think I'd prefer the Petite France side of the river.

We have stayed at the du Dragon and found that the area was very convenient for walking to see almost everything.
It is one of the cleanest hotels that I have ever stayed in, in Strasbourg. It is starkly modern, but we found that very appealing. We could hear the birds singing in the morning.
The down side can be the fact that there is no elevator in one of the buildings (there are two quaint buildings) and there can be a lot of stairs to climb.
I am not familiar with the Hotel de l'Europe.

Thanks everyone! I went with Hotel de L'Europe because of the fact they do have a parking garage and we'll be driving in. Also, thanks for all the ideas on what to do. It really helps me get a feel for the place. I can't wait! I'll report back! Happy travels!

Since you have a car let me suggest something that you might be interested in. There is a wonderful castle south of Strasbourg, perched on top of a mountain, that you can only get to by car. It is very impressive. It is called Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle and you can find information on it at http://www.casteland.com/puk/castle/alsace/brhin/h_koeni/haut_koenigsbourg.htm
The castle is in great shape and very interesting. It is also a nice drive from Strasbourg to get there. We also did drive from Strasbourg into the Black Forest of Germany (just across the river) and it was a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon. You can drive from Strasbourg, into Germany, south through the Black Forest, and end up in Basel, Switzerland, then drive back to Strasbourg along the river (either side) and still be back in time for dinner. It is a great day trip.

We stayed at Hotel de l'Europe last Oct. and the location is really good. The hotel itself is very nice and it's an ancient building with some antiques on display in the hallways. The breakfast is good also. And Marie, one of the desk clerks, is very friendly and most helpful. The only thing we did not like was our room which was sloping and the ensuite blue bathroom. It was one of the older type rooms but you can request one of their more modern ones.
