stopover in Milan

We are heading over to Portugal in January possibly with Alitalia via Milan and wondered if anyone knows of any inexpensive but clean accommodations in Milan centre. Also would it be possible in a few days to travel to Lake Como or Venice from Milan. Any advice would be appreciated greatly

Milano Centrale to Venice in as little as 2 hrs 40 minutes via Eurostar; Centrale to Varenna (for mid-Lake Como area-Menaggio, Bellagio, etc.) 1 1/2 hrs by train. Hope this helps some.

Hi

My wife and I went to Milan and Venice in June this year and we stayed at a hotel called hotel Marconi which is located near Stazione Centrale. I have posted a "review" of the hotel in my trip report which is posted on my homepage www.gardkarlsen. Maybe you can find some useful information there

IMO, there is plenty to see in Milan for 2-3 days. The Lake Como area will be quite cold in January (as will Milan) in the high 30s F, so you may not enjoy it, as taking the ferries up and down the lake may not be that pleasant; also rain is likely. I would stick to Milan.

Venice would take about 3-4 hours by train, a bit faster if you fly. It will be cold as well, but would be a better choice than Como, IMO, as there are plenty of indoor options like museums, etc that you won't get in the Como area. Also, you won't spend a lot of time on boats on the open water in Venice, which you would in Como to get around to the various town along the lake. Venice is very beautiful in the winter, IMO and there are no hordes of tourists either.

Take a look at weatherbase.com for historical average temps and rainfall. Also, days will be shorter in January in these parts of northern Italy. Take a look at sunrise.sunset.com.

I assume you know that transiting via Milan will add a lot of time to your flight as you are going very far west to fly back east to Portugal; but if you are getting a deal on Alitalia, I assume it is worth it.

Sorry, Milan is of course east of Portgual when flying from the US. Still a long way out of the way to get to Spain.
