I don't know how far north of London you intend to go, but you can stay at Durham castle during the student holidays (summer, easter, etc) - the website is www.dur.ac.uk/~dun0www/Pages/Info/prices.html. I think the accommodation is a bit basic though (mainly student dorms?). There's a more luxurious castle a few miles away that's a hotel: www.lumleycastle.com.

The Langley Castle Hotel is way way north of London, just this side of Hadrian's Wall, but it's just terrific. Looks like it was build by Disney, but it's authentic. Do a web search for the URL. You can see photos of it, including all the rooms, and decide. We loved it.

Hi Renee
I have stayed in a few castle in England. My fav is Thornbury Castle jsut out side Bristol (2 hrs from London) Others include Swinton Park, and Augill Castle.
You can see them all at www.celticcastles.com which offers loads of castles in the UK
I have not stayed in Lumley yet, this is next on my list though. I have read a lot about Lanley and it is very smoking so just something to think about.
If you like Thornbury, you must eat there as well the food is amazing.
Enjoy!
