Stockholm Archipelago

I am planning a trip to Stockholm this July. I have a hotel and a good idea of what I want to do in Stockholm. However, I am struggling to figure out the best option for the archipelago. Should I make this a day trip? Overnight? Is the Sandhamn Seglarhotell a relaxing place to enjoy nature and some creature comforts or is it decrepit and living on its reputation?

I love sailing, charming towns, and being near the water or better yet on the water. I'm not expecting to find Maine (I want to discover Sweden!) but perhaps if I tell you that I love the smaller, unspoiled towns of Midcoast and Down East Maine that will give you a clue as to what I am looking for?

Usually, I can figure out a lot from guidebooks but I'm struggling this time! I would welcome suggestions about day trip options, hotel recommendations, or favorite islands or experiences in the Archipelago.

I was happy to make my time in the archipelago a half-day experience, from Stockholm to Vaxholm and back. Unfortunately, I can't say whether that will give you the experience you seek....
