Staying outside of Frankfurt

Hello! I'm going to be flying into Frankfurt next month and I'm planning to stay in Mainz or Heidelberg. If anyone else has done this and can relate their experience I always enjoy suggestions and opinions! I would also like to know if anyone can recommend any hotels or hostels or B&B's in these areas. Thanks!!!

Any particular reason to pick Mainz or Heidelberg as opposed to other possibilities? What is the purpose of your trip? How many days will you have there? Just you, or will someone be with you?

I would chose Heidelberg over Mainz if you are staying for a few days. I think that there are more things to do and see in Heidelberg.

theres a lot more to do and to see arround Mainz than Heidelberg. Mainz is nice town that really lives. Heidelberg (in summer) is just a kind of Disneyland.

The big hotel in Mainz on the Rhine river is the Hilton. However, it is really starting to show wear and tear and has had some bedbug problems lately I heard. Its only a couple blocks over from the town center and clock tower.

Just came back from Mainz for the third time. It's not the most exciting town, but February is Fashing/Karneval time (weekend of 25-27) which Mainz & Cologne are well known for. It's a good place to hop on the Rhein river cruise and return by train.

I've also been to Heidelberg 3 times and enjoyed the castle ruin, student town, beerhouses.
