I know this is truly a matter of opinion, but I'll ask anyhow.

What are the disadvantages of staying near Termini rail station? Is it unsafe in general? Is is safe to walk in the area after dark?

Are there any advantages? Specifically, are there many places to eat within walking distance? Is there a laundry nearby?

In past trips, we have sometimes opted to stay near main rail stations (for example, the Hauptbahnhof in Munich). Our experience has been that while such areas are certainly not "charming," the easy access to public transporation and other services/stores has outweighed lack of charm. If we are willing to choose convenience over scenic and picturesque, is this area a reasonable choice? Thank you.

We stayed at a B&B a few blocks from Termini right off of Via Nazionale this past spring - 1 block from the Repubblica metro stop.

I didn't feel it was unsafe and we walked the area after dark every night. A couple nights we had dinner at restaurants in the area (which we walked to), but I didn't notice if there were any laundries around.

There weren't as many people walking around in the evening as there were in the more popular tourist areas, but it was ok.

Main reasons for staying in the area was budget - less expensive than other areas - and convenience in getting to Termini to catch our train to Florence. We were able to walk the couple blocks with no problem.

xxxx, The area around Termini is not unsafe. The closer to the station the more people and activity. We stayed 5 blocks away and you wouldn't even know you were close to the station. Yes there is a laundry and many restaurants. The place where we stayed was not too fancy and an easy walk from the station. If you want the name Email me.

I have stayed near Termini, on Via Gorgio Amendola. I never felt unsafe. However, make sure your hotel has windows that have been soundproofed. Otherwise, the noise will keep you awake at night.

There are many cafes/restaurants between G. Amendola and Via Napoleono III. You can walk to Termini to change money, as there are cambios inside.

I think of the part of Rome that most tourists want to see as a pretty small area. Basically the triangle from Termini to the Colisseum to the Vatican. I didn't think of any of that as "unsafe". As far as restaurants, lundries and other points of interest or convenience nothing is very far away.

I didn't linger much near Termini, but this is what I observed. The area that is a couple blocks west around Via Nazionale is fine, and indeed upscale. When I took the Terravision coach from Termini, we drove past parts to the north of the station (I think) that did not look pleasant at all. So I'd avoid those parts. I can't say about the area south or east of the train station. I did check out the area near San Giovanni in Laterano, and I thought this area looked depressed and less pleasant also.

I know from previous research that there are laundromats near Termini in Rome, but I didn't use them. Look up Onda Blu or Splashnet (going from memory).

I think a lot of sites are very walkable from Termini (and some will be quite close like the Colosseum and the Baths). It would be a fairly long walk from Campo dei Fiori (for example) to Termini, but certainly doable. So while this area would not be my first choice, I think if you are judicious you could do fine.

I would say the the practicality of being close to the hub of public transportation outweighs the disadvantages of lack of charm, but I could not see myself staying near the Termini Station for more than two or three days.
