I am sorry to hear of your bad experience.
I fear you may be out of luck getting compensation - most hotels cover themselves with a 'not responsible for items left in room' clause. Yes, it's a copout, but not much one can do, other than take out special insurance beforehand, or keep valuable items on one's person the entire time one is out of the room.
Thieves, alas, are everywhere. What is worse, they don't always even look 'unsavoury' - people have reported realizing only belatedly that that smartly dressed man or woman was the one who robbed them.

I am sorry this happened to you - its easy for everyone to tell you what you should have done in retrospect. But, hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
This may or may not help but you could let the manager at the hotel know that you will be posting this experience on several travel boards (Trip advisor, fodors etc) that are accessed by travelers in many countries. Many hotels are now aware of these types of sites and may prefer not to have bad word of mouth available on the internet.
You might also contact the ombudsmen at Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. They can sometimes help.
