Avignon or Nimes are closest:

Marseilles is a short bullet train ride away

Lyon is very close by train (or car)

where are you coming from.

Bonjour Monsieur Woin!

You are nicer than me Pq, but we all know that !

You forgot Carcassonne, further away but could catch a very cheap Ryanair flight. and then rent a car.

Ps : you'll note that I didn't correct the missing 'x'...

I was through there a few years ago, I think the Tour de France went through it that year. I doubt if you'll get flights to Avignon or Nimes. Marseille is the closest, then Lyon, of major airports. Lyon is farther by driving than Marseille.

There is no train going there as it doesn't have a train station. Marseille is closer by train, also, but the closest station is Pierrelatte, then Orange or Montelimar. Pierrelatte is about 8-10 km away, the others about 30 km away. And no "bullet" trains go to any of those, only TERs.

If you plan to rent a car, either Lyon or Marseille would be fine, pick which flight you prefer.

Yes Christina is right -I was talking about getting to Amboise-TGV station where you could rent a car and be well out of town.

trois (3) chateauX in the French town name.

I never heard of it though thought I had been everywhere around Avignon.

Saint- Paul- Trois-Chateaux is in the Drome region and is about 60kms from Avignon. We stayed about 5kms out of town in 2010 and it was a good base to explore the Drome. There are lots of interesting villages around. We also did a day trip to drive along the Gorges of the Ardeche. Our gite was actually on a lavender farm, but sadly, we were there in October.
Like most places in country France, a car will be needed to get around.

Unlike Germany and Switzerland, etc yes rural France is poorly served by public transporation and if staying outside main cities a car is a must.

OP - you really should specify where you are coming from. I live in the San Francisco Bay area. If I was trying to visit St Paul Trois Chateau, I would fly non-stop to Paris, and then take the TGV from CDG to either Avignon or Valence. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to fly to CDG, then fly to Nimes/Marseille/etc - then take a train or drive near/to St Paul.

If you can fly directly (non-stop) to Nimes/Marseille/Lyon/etc - that's a different story.
