St. Gilgen
We are planning on spending 2 or 3 nights in St. Gilgen in mid-September. We will have spent 5 nights in Prague, 5 nights in Vienna, and perhaps 2 nights in Salzburg. Can anyone suggest a place to stay. We are mid 60's, prefer a quiet place with not too much climbing. Don't need fancy. Near the lake not necessary but would be a plus. Thanks for your help.

Oh, sebinah, have I got the place for you. While not by the lake, the lake is only a pleasant 5 minute walk. But the Schernthaner Hotel is just one short block from the lovely Rathaus.
Friendly owners, reasonably priced and very clean, the Scherthaner is about as quaint as you can get. They also have an elevator which is important for my husband who has some arthritis in his feet.

We stayed here in 2007 based on recommendations from another Fodorite poster, bobthenavigator, and have reservations again for the latter part of September.

Hi sebinah,
Haven't been here yet but have just booked myself at the Hotel Wenglhof right on the lake:

I second the Schernthaner Hotel. I was just there. It had everything we needed: Elevator, comfy beds, good shower over a tub, balcony, sitting chairs (in the room & on balcony), mini fridge, a desk area for our laptop, wireless connection (for an additional fee which was minimal), free parking, good buffet breakfast, coffee available all day (make it yourself and put some Euros in the 'kitty'), and if you need laundry done there's a place right across the street that does a beautiful job altho not inexpensive but convenient. It was very clean (as I found all the places we stayed in Germany, Austria and Italy.) Everything else is a short walk from there. Enjoy!!
