Gerianne

My family and I are also on Splendour of The Seas in July. What are your cruise dates? Ours are 7/7 thru 7/14.

By the way, Captain Ahab, while your suggestion to post on the cruise board as well is helpful, I have found much more info regarding shore excursions, etc. on the European board. It gets significantly more traffic than the cruise board.

Hi,

We booked the same cruise for June 23-30. Have been doing extensive research as far as shore excurisons, etc. I prefer not to take the one the ship offers. I heard that in Napoli, if you want to go to Capri you really do not need the shore excursion you can do on your own. This also applies to Malta, Also, distances from the seaports to the cities in some cases (Florence and Rome) are over one hour by car.

Please let me know if you have conducted any type of research on the this matter.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Miriam

we did RCL same itinerary 2 years ago - last summer we did another line but similar itinerary. We did all our own shore excursions - with the exception of one to Pompei. It depends what you are interested in. I love to shop and try different restaurants - as well as see lots of sights. My husband is very into boats, harbors, and also sights. You can go into Rome or Florence on the train and there are always taxis you can hire to take you around. If you are traveling with another couple or can find another couple interested in doing what you want to do - you can share the cost of a driver and car and they can show you things you won't see on lots of tours.
From Nice - we also did Ez - which is a neat little village on top of a mountain. It had a great cactus garden and lots of shops. Then we had the driver take us to Monte Carlo. We walked around and saw the casino, palace, churches, etc on our own and then took the train back into Nice. It also depends what days you are in what cities. On Sundays - lots of things are closed so you need to keep that in mind. If you have any specific questions - just e-mail me.
