spiros the taxi driver
Hi all,
I have a new question. Has anyone hired Spiros as a guide in Athens?
I would like to know how much historical information he has since I would love to spend time with a guide with some real knowledge.
Thanks for your restaurant advice - all on my list!!!

Spiros is a driver- not a licensed guide. We used Spiros 3 summers ago for a day in Athens as we were on a cruise. He lived in N.J. for some years so he speaks English well. He was fine- when we went to the Acropolis we had to get a licensed guide. He just droped us off. I honestly found him to be fine- not great, not terrible. He was one of many guides that we had that trip and he fell out in the average category.

If I understand correctly, drivers and licensed guides have to be separate things in Greece. I have encountered some confusion over this (at work; not going there myself) but that seems to be the case. So it seems that getting the entire thing in one package doesn't really work in Greece. I've heard about some OK drivers that provide some guiding, but no one of the really highly knowledgeable or scholarly variety.

Thanks. Have investigated this and think just a good guide book will do the trick. I don't want to fork out money and not get a good guide. Those experiences are too disappointing and a precious waste of time. It's just a crap shoot without a name from someone you trust.

i dont think you need a guide for athens
our tour guide fell silent as soon as we hit athens
not that much to talk about i guess
dont get me wrong - it is worth a visit but you can do it yourself
just get a guide for the acropolis

Thanks for your input. I just talked to someone today who said he found a terrific guide outside the Acropolis. Evidently, they hang out near the kiosks. The plan now is to go to the tourist board there and see if they can give us some names.

We had Michael from George The Taxi Driver. He lives in Athens (if I remember correctly he was born there) and he was
FANTASTIC. Besides being knowledgeable he was reasonable. You can "google" george the taxi driver. I found him on this site before it was "improved".
