Thanks. Actually I have 3 nights in Granada because we are flying in from Colorado, so the first day/night will be getting there and checking in. I figured that would give us two good days before taking off again. Is that too long? I'll look closer at Malaga and Nerja. Madrid seems to have mixed reviews I was given the impression it is new and urban in comparison to other cities, so not worth a lot of time. Good that I am beginning to plan early. Reading guide books are a start, but your advice has been very enlightening.

I thought Granada easily worth at least 2 full days. YMMV.

If you are interested in art, then Madrid is easily worth at least 4 full days.

Your first three days in Granada will be fine. Just enough time to see a few things before heading out.
Málaga (a pleasant city?) has changed quite a bit since your husband was last in Spain, and well worth at least three days, if not four. The AC Málaga Palacio (Marriott) has one of the best locations for vising the city, close to the waterfront and the very walkable old city with a number of great places for tasting the local cuisine and wines.
Madrid has long been one of our favorite cities. There is more than enough to keep one busy for days on end. Keep an eye on esMadrid (www.esmadrid.com) to see wha's happening during your dates. You won't be dissapointed. Our favorite restaurant in Barrio Salamanca, Álbora (en.restaurantealbora.com), even has an expert jamón slicer who could pass for a slightly younger Robert Downey Jr. on any given day.
True, Madrid is not as old as some of the other towns and villages you'll be visiting, but still dates from the 9th century, and has a rich history.

In Madrid, do get away from the usual Sol/ Mayor area and visit park Retiro and beautiful,
upscale Salamanca district north of Retiro .
I would not spend 2 nights in Ronda...not much there.
agree with Robert about staying in Madrid and making day trips to Toledo and Segovia.
We stayed in Granada for 3 nights...it was fine. you need time to relax and get over the jet lag.
In Seville, take a bus to Italica ...for half a day .

I thought Toledo worth two full days, not counting my 4 days in Madrid or my day in Segovia...
It really depends on what you want to see and experience, and you can only figure that out by checking good guidebooks, marking opening/closing times on a calendar, and seeing how things fit together.

as kja said...best to read a few guidebooks and decide what interests you the most.
Fodors posters often have very different ideas about how much time to spend in various cities
- all according to their taste.
You have a long time to prepare and find your own path.
