Southern Italy--tell me more!

My husband and I have both traveled extensively in Italy and Europe--just not together...... We'd like to change that with a week-long trip to the southern region of Italy. We are parents of a 1 year old and don't have more time to travel without our child. We are not bound to luxury travel--we just love Italy and want to spend a week in a beautiful area where we can hike & explore, hang out, and drink some good wine--preferably by the sea. Two of my favorite areas are Amalfi and the Cinque Terre, but we'd like to go someplace where neither of us has been so we can discover it together. If you have any suggestion about: Where to go for a week, how to get there in a direct flight from the Midwest, what to do there, where to stay without spending our child's college tuition, and why you love it, we would truly appreciate your input.

Thanks!

Sorry I can't offer any first hand experience, but I recommend searching this site for Apulia, Basilicata, or of course, Sicily...

Sound like an idea for a Fodorites' trip! Maybe other couples with a pre-toddler... for "cross-tolerance"...

with a pediatrician (wink...)

Best wishes,

Rex
Julie,

You can search for some information on Sicily. It is definitely a place for "discovering together," since its scenery is so different from what you find in the other parts of Italy. With a rental car (or even without one) a week is an ideal amount of time for a first visit to Sicily if you select your destinations wisely.

M
