Sorrento or Positano???

My wife and I are planning a 3 week trip to Italy this June/July and are ending the trip with 4 nights in the Amalfi Coast region. We are trying to decide between staying in Sorrento (Minerva hotel) or in Positano. We'd like to be able to get up to Pompei for the day so we were considering sorrento as the better choice; at the same time we may just be ready to unwind after a healty dose of cathedrals. Any thoughts? Minerva recommendations? We're traveling by train/bus throughout.

We stayed in Sorrento and went from there to Pompeii and to Positano and to Capri. We found it more central. I don't know about the Minerva. Sorry.

Do you have a hotel that you would recommend in Sorrento?

Positano is much more dramatically beautiful than Sorrento,(for me it was one of the gems of the Amalfi Coast) but it will also be quite crowded by the end of June/July. Also, since you won't have a car, it will be easier to get to Pompeii from Sorrento.

I don't know anything about the Minerva, but we're headed to the Tramontano in July with our family. The Tramontano is also a 4-star, very close to Piazza Tasso, which as I remember it, is pretty much the center of town.

Have a wonderful time, and try to get to Positano and Ravello at least for a day. You'll never forget that day if you do!

Sorrento is definitely a better hub for day trips. But yes Positano is definitely far more dramatic. With 4 nights, you might consider one overnight in Capri, then 3 days in Sorrento.

Minerva is a good spot. Some travel groups stay there and it's fairly convenient. The same group has 3 other excellent hotels - President/Vesuvius/Bristol if I remember correctly - which are all winners but slightly more expensive than Minerva. I believe it's been commented on in previous messages so you might want to do a search, but this is a good choice.
