Sorrento for 3 nights?
I am sailing around Sicily with a group from Palermo for 8 days in July, and flying back to USA from Rome. I have 3 days (alone, not with the group) between disembark in Palermo and the flight from Rome. Based on my readings here, I am thinking of spending it in Sorrento, with day trip to Capri, perhaps Positano. Any advice on this plan? I will be using the train/ferry for transportation.

You can day trip to Capri and Positano by ferry from Sorrento. If going to Capri, you need to try to get an early ferry and either be aware of the return schedules (the ferries don't run late) or book your return at the same time. For Positano, I would ferry one way and bus one way.

Sorrento has its vespas, it's true, but it also has a sublimely beautiful spot on a balcony between the mountains: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p56708579.html
and the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p58232646.html
There are many choices of places to stay, but you might enjoy being just around the corner from Marina Grande: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p58232641.html
which is still a working fishing port: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p58232656.html
and where you can find a lovely meal of fresh fish at one of the small restaurants lining the harbor: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p58232651.html
From Marina Grande it's a 10-minute walk up into the town proper, where you will find the vespas http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p56708569.html
and the pizzas: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p56708577.html
