That Australian assessment of what American women on the beach looks like reminds me that the basic problem here is that many people have a preconcieved idea about what another group "looks" like. If someone thinks that all American women have red hair that they wear in pigtails and they only wear yellow dresses, then spends enough time, sure enough he'll spot one of those reassuring him that his picture was correct. Never mind that meanwhile he looked past a couple thousand other American women who did not have red hair in pigtails and wore yellow dresses.

That was me who posted that stereotypical comment of what I thought an American woman looked like. Granted, that was ten years ago and working in the tourism industry, but more often than not, that was how we sort of differentiated the majority of American women from the Australian women.
Now, having lived in the US the past ten years, I know that is not the case, but there are slight facial features that are more indicative of a caucasian American woman compared to a caucasian Australian woman.
doonhamer: Loved the post, and the stereotypes! Will your answer ever be revealed?

Hi emilid, thanks for posting. I chuckled when I had read that comment of yours as due to the heat here in the Sacramento Valley of CA believe me when I say that my hair is one terrible mess as I have course sort of wavy hair. And it is so hot here only a fool would work on a suntan. However I have noticed some women that have had their teeth bleached at their dentist and they have so overdone the bleaching they do look like they have dentures.
I did understand your comments though because in the late 80's when I was in Italy I did notice a lot of American women with the deep suntans and the very overly sprayed hair.
My dad was raised in Australia btw. He was English/Scot. For some reason he did not look like an American..but he did not have an Aussie accent, it was more like an English accent or something, he had a beautiful voice. And please dear friends in OZ, don't take that as a negative comment on your Australian accent which I love. It is just that I always wondered why my father didn't have one. And although he lived in the US from the time he was 18 he never lost his style of speaking, whatever it was.
