solo female to London - what to do at night?
Hi..

I leave Monday for ten days in London. This is my first trip alone there. I have been there before though.

I have a question for anyone who does it alone - what do you do at night to meet other folks? I am a little bit shy, mostly of crowds - I would feel funny walking into a club or a busy bar or something which looked 'happening' if I were all alone - everyone is with friends!

Maybe something a little more low-key? anyone who actually lives there, or, travels alone, do you have any sort of 'less intimidating' things to do at night (especially on a weekend!) which are fun, might allow me to meet nice folks, without feeling MORE alone?

thanks!

Amber

Amber---Guess I don't understand the problem. You've been to London before, but you don't know anything about where to go when you return? If that is the case, my suggestion is to ask the female flight attendants on the plane as you fly into London. They are usually very helpful in recommending places to go that would be what you are looking for. Not only that, but it's a pretty good bet one of them or a friend might even want to accompany you!!

One idea is to find free lectures open to the public, many of which start at 5pm. There?s a list on http://www.indiana.edu/~victoria/lectures.html/.

If you like classical music there are of course many concerts that start about 7.30. Many singles go to these, including me. The best lists are in the events magazines Time Out and What?s On that you can buy at a news kiosk in your arrival airport.

Welcome to London

Ben Haines
Go on pub walks. They start around 7 or 7:30 and end around 10:00 or 10:30. You learn something about London and go safely to areas that you might not want to go to alone at night. Most groups are of mixed ages and are quite friendly. John Muffty has one in Chelsea and one in Mayfair. Do a search on this forum to find time and underground meeting place. Cost about $7 plus a pint or two [soft drink O.K.]

Some of the Museums have late night hours one day per week.

Also, Mon - Thurs, you might be able to go into the House of Commons from 2:30 - 10:30 pm to listen to a debate.

Of course, you should get tickets for some plays and/or musicals.

Amber,
I went to London for the first time on my own last year. I highly recommend going on the London Walks that are given at night--especially pub tours already mentioned. I also highly recommend the Jack the Ripper Tour if you haven't already gone.
London is also Theater central of course, try to catch a show or two.
Vanessa

I often go to London solo. I never have any problems finding things to do. When I was younger I did go clubbing but now I seldom do. Now I go to the theatre almost every night, concerts are good too. The evening programs at the major museums are very good. And of course there are several London Walks most evenings.

Hi, Amber. I have traveled alone before and am currently planning my first solo trip to London. Here are some things that I was considering for the evenings:

1) Pub walk with London Walks (www.walks.com)

2) Theatre - Already booked one ticket for the New Globe Theatre.

3) Evening concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields -
(http://207.228.254.57/jserv/concerts/index.jsp)

4) Houses of Parliament - Some debates run until late in the evening. My travel guide mentions M-W 2:30-10, but it varies.

5) Museums - Some museums have later hours. British Museum closes at 8:30 on Thursday and Fridays, and there may be others with late hours. Also a nice way to keep your days open for other things.

5) If you haven't seen Stonehenge yet, Stonehenge Tours offers a sunset tour.

6) I like to walk a lot and, depending on the weather, will probably do a lot of city strolling and people watching in the evenings.

Finally, in a city like London with so many tourists, you're bound to meet people. So if you're interested in doing clubbing, try to meet people when you're on the walking tours.
