Kendrina,

Could it be the week surrounding the big derby vs Real Madrid? Of course that depends on the fixture list which will change each season.

Of course there's always a circus when David and Victoria Beckham come to town...

No, there's not such a thing We spaniards are famous for holidays and festival, but still don't have this one, we'll have to think about it , ahahaha. To avoid ? absolutely none. In March there's Fallas in Valencia and there is the place to be, not to avoid March 19 is holiday in most of Spain, but I think it's not in Barcelona.

They celebrate my birthday as a holiday? How sweet of them! Seriously, why? St. Joseph's feast day?

Yes, missypie, St Joseph's It's the Valencia biggest festival (the biggest festival in Spain, also) and in some other places too. Some years ago was a holiday in the whole Spain but nowadays it is only in some communities. So we celebrate your birthday, hehehe.

Is there some special Spanish connection with St. Joseph, such that it's celebrated in a major way (as opposed to the days of all the other saints)? Or is it a convenient day for a holiday, sort of like Columbus Day has become in the US?

Only in Valencia, which is their major feast because it is the saint patron of carpenters and Valencia was famous for that (it still is). So they build "Fallas" to celebrate and burn them on the night of March 19.It's a big festival that lasts for 4 days. Here you have the story in English if you want to read it :

In the rest of Spain it depends, but it's something like a regular Sunday
