We have about 10cm here and in Friesland and Groningen yesterday they got 30-40cm.

I've had worse dandruff!

Well - we're expected to get our first real snow of the season tomorrow. About a foot expected along the Mid Atlantic and New England coast - with 15 to 18" inland.

For anyone coming to NYC don;t worry - you can still get around. Nothing stops the subway. The last major storm that wreaked havoc with transit was the blizzard of '88 - 1888, when they decided to move the trains underground in Manhattan.

As most of the UK rarely gets snow, it isn't worth the amount of investment it would require to keep things going the way you can in parts of the world where heavy snow is a regular occurrence. Northern Scotland gets more snow and things keep going pretty well...except some of the wee roads that go up high, and there are plenty of you who wouldn't want to drive those in mid Summer. It isn't a news story when it snows there...
But it is all very pretty!

Hey NYT - Do you remember the blizzard of '96 (1996) when Manhattan was virtually shut down (above ground, that is)? People were cross-country skiing up Park Avenue!!

About 5" in Sussex this morning. There was a lot less as you went West 15+miles.

My road is still covered in compacted snow and is pretty dodgy as it is narrow and heavily parked.

There is the merest sprinkling of snow up here on the south Cotswold hills. Barely worth a mention.

For a few minutes at lunchtime there were big flakes swirling around in the town 680ft down in the valley, and everyone was smiling at each other and looking happy, and it felt really Christmassy!

Yes - I remember 1996. I missed 2 days of work since it took them that long to get the side road (where my garage was) clear. But that was huge - like 28" and blizzard conditions (high wind and low wind chills) and it snowed for like 36 hours straight.

But it was fun in Central Park - a block from our house.

not much fun on the Eurostar overnight - 2000 [yep, that's the right no. of noughts, i haven't just pressed the button too often] people trapped and had to evacuated, some after many, many hours.

all this talk of snow has really gotten me worried...due to arrive London on Jan 23rd and I come from a tropical country! uggh

By the end of January, who knows? That's when I would, in the past, not have been surprised by a cold snap. But it could just as well decide to go up into the 50s Fahrenheit.

I'm hoping Happyfella is still a happy fella given the snow and all international trains through the Netherlands being stopped. More snow here today, no public transport worth talking about. Mostly because it's a Sunday of course so there's no great need to clear the roads for vast number of commuters. Shame it is the last Sunday before Christmas and a peak shopping day normally.
I expect that Amsterdam looks wonderful actually, snow and frozen canals.
It was lovely in the woods this afternoon.
