Sneakers in Italy?

I am planning my first trip to Italy, this Sept and i have noticed in a few threads that sneakers seem to be a "no no". Am I mistaken? if so, whats up with that? and what are the recommended "walking" shoes?

You obviously haven't read the entire content of all those threads you are referring to. Most folks will tell you that you can wear whatever you wish. The ones who are acting as self-appointed "fashion police" end up saying that if you DO wear sneakers then everyone will know you are a "tourist." So much for these same people's often very loud claims about how proud they are to be an American. What is interesting is that apparently if anyone ELSE wears sneakers they somehow won't look as much like a tourist as you apparently will.

If you want to wear sneakers, wear them!! I repeat, if you want to wear sneakers, wear them!!!!

People wear all sorts of shoes!!!!!! Comfort is what is most important!!

Wear sneakers if they are your most comfortable shoes!!!!

You could always buy a pair of Prada sneakers, made in Italy, even if it means you have to apply for a home equity loan.

As the website below notes, they even come with an "authenticity card" (in case you're stopped by the SAC, the Sneaker Authenticity Carabineri) and "an elegant sleeper bag."
