This is something I don't understand. I'm not really a technology person but do (obviously) go on line and have an updated phone, etc. What I don't get is why people would read the posts from spiteful fools--why not just skip them? I've read articles about highschool kids who say they are being 'stalked' by a person who texts them all the time. Why don't they just delete the texts and eventually the creep will stop doing it. Just because something comes through you don't have to read it---extinguish the action by not responding. Take charge---the nastiness is about the person who sent the message, not the person who (hopefully) ignores it. Cheers, BMK

"You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does"

Morrissey and Johnny Marr 1984

Marr was a bad influence.

Trip report! First time to Manchester last August. Got the Rennaisance for $70 on Priceline. Went to King's Road to see Morrissey's depressing bedsit home from his adolescence days, had a pint in name-dropped places like Whalley Range, trudged slowly over wet sands in a seaside town that they forgot to close down (come Armageddon come to Blackpool) and got my picture taken in front of Salford Lads Club. Trip of a lifetime.

janisj: I don't necessarily disagree with you that there are regional differences in the usage of the English language.

British English as spoke in India is very different from British English as spoken in London, and even British Indian English is not all uniform across India as indeed even London English is not uniform across London! (We know this latter fact because Professor 'iggins' marvellous studies in My Fair Lady )

However, there are definitely ways to communicate universally in English without snark, insult, whatever - as witness the Asia Forum. There are vast differences in the way English is spoken and understood across Asia, yet those posting on the Asia Forum - whether posting from Asia or elsewhere - are perfectly able to communicate and to get along despite all these differences. The Asia Forum is a very user-friendly and friendly forum.

It can be done.

Who is the wussy Morrisey?

Like going to the Vatican and saying who's the bloke with the funny hat.

THE SMITHS. Manchester's greatest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5HpeA_WSo

Note 10 million views of a band who were around when GaGa was in nappies...sorry diapers...sorry huggies.

I am very surprised you still have use of all your limbs to write that trip report. Salford Lads Club or Whalley range aren't places you would want to be around after dark.

Sorry rephrase taht, they poncified Whalley Range, quite posh now.

LSky: This is the internet; lots of people, lots of opinion and many, many ways of expressing those opinions.

I think Fodor's is fairly tame.

FWIW, I'm with you. Some folks have a tendency to seek out offense whenever and wherever they can. (Ironically, it is often the worst and most obnoxious offenders who are the first to cry "foul" when someone dares to push back. Go figure.)

And for crying out loud... The Smiths were far from Manchester's greatest. Please.

The Smiths were far from Manchester's greatest.

and Mr Go's vote to... The Bee Gees? Herman's Hermits? The Hollies? a quarter of The Monkees, Georgie Fame?

god help.

The 60s made Manchester a laughing stock, the 80s gave it some stock.

I will give you the Buzzcocks in the 70s and technically Joy Division were children of the 70s but

Manchester was the 80s.

easytraveler: Oh - don't even try to use the asia forum as an example/paragon. There have been some HUGE fights on the Asia board and some feuds lasting months. One of the most knowledgeable/prolific posters was banned and only allowed back after a very big campaign.

So while some do play kissy/kissy/nice/nice over there, there are just as many strong opinions/snark/sarcasm as here on Europe.

DG: I will give you the Buzzcocks in the 70s and technically Joy Division...

Well those were the first two to come to mind, yes. And New Order of course (the earlier stuff, anyway).

But personally, I'd rather listen to the Chemical Bros., Stone Roses, The Verve, James, The Doves, Elbow or even (god help me) Oasis than Multi-Misery-Morrissey on most days.

janisj: HUGE fights on the Asia board

I've seen some of those, too. Especially some of the BKK threads. Yikes.

sorry, I haven't been on the Asia board for months and months, so know nothing of these HUGE fights. Over the years, albeit infrequently, every time I've been on that forum, it's been very civil. Are these recent fights?

I know of only one poster who was a PITA, who posted long, long, long posts, a lot of which information was very good but a lot of which information was questionable. I thought that poster had been using Fodors to lure others to his personal website, but may be wrong in this regard.

No, they've been going on for ages. And it isn't just one - they really don't suffer fools over there (which can often be a good thing IMO)

"for ages"?

I must be clicking on the wrong threads in the Asia forum...

so, is the conclusion then that it's impossible to have a witty, funny (punny) time again?

Who is the guy in the funny hat?

I am just an old Yank who has only liked three bands since 1975. And if one of them ain't dead, I'm not interested.

And I never been to Manchester either.

I didn't get the answer I wanted because I didn't get an answer at all.

I was attacked because I wasn't in a position to conform to the wishes of the "gods".

I can understand somebody pointing out that it would be easier or more enjoyable or more efficient if I followed a certain approach. But why insist that is the only way when clearly it isn't.

If a rule is non-negotiable I don't mind the disadvantages being pointed out. But the goal was to get advice on how to best plan and stay within those rules. I understand that compromises of some sort would have to be made.

We've done it before and were perfectly happy with the results.

It's interesting how quickly the "gods" recognized themselves.

I've been very active on several forums for years. I've gotten excellent advice that helped me plan great trips. I've also shared my experiences with others planning their trips.

Prior to this one trip I've never had a problem.

I think I know what it might be. There are certain destinations that have a reputation for the arrogance of its inhabitants. I've always insisted that's not the case as on prior trips I never noticed it.

Now I understand it's not the inhabitants but a few of the posters.

I'm really sorry I've been so soured by that forum.

I've reread some of the recent 'controversial' threads, and IMHO the OP is more the one who gave attitude. The responses are what are typical,,please give more info, have you considered xxx. No attacks.

I got lost somewhere in Morrisey, Asia, and the guy with the funny hat. I still don't get it. If a poster you can identify talks trash to you, why would you read it? This is not real life--this is a CHAT---all you have to do is hit a key and the loser will be out of your face. Then you can carry on as usual and write whatever you want. BMK
