Definitely not. (5 hours? Where are you flying from and to?)

On my 10-hour flight from Rome to NY this past Sunday, no smoking was allowed. If you're on a 5-hour flight from Italy to the middle of the Atlantic, probably anything goes.

Very witty Carol. Indeed, I'm flying from Italy to Bermuda. Smack dab in the middle of the Atlantic.

On my recent Alitalia round trip, at least two passengers in each direction were smoking in the lavatory. When they opened the door and walked back to their seats, the cigarette smell was unmistakable.

Whenever someone sighs for the "good old days", I like to remind them the "good old days" included smoke on airplanes and in offices.

I like the good new days.

I traveled Alitalia only once and wouldn't do it again. I didn't see or smell anyone smoking, but the service was absolutely terrible. The flight attendants were rude and the food sucked. Maybe I was just on a bad flight, but it left a bad mark. I'd recommend Virgin Airlies or Cross Air.

Gabi: No it wasn't just a bad flight. I had the same exact problems on a round trip flight in April. I learned fast. Before my return flight I bought a panini in the airport so I wouldn't starve. Now if I have to fly Alitalia again, I will bring food and keep my distance from the crew.

Dear [email protected],
Sorry to break it to you but Alitalia does not fly to Bermuda, and if they did, it would still be longer than 5 hours flying time. Perhaps you should check your ticket.

It's really quite simple....

Thanks to people who understand these things all flights that originate or terminate in the US must be no smoking no ifs ands or butts about it.

I have to say, aside from the people who smoked in the lavatory, my Alitalia flights was excellent. I had heard horror stories and was worried, but I was pleasantly surprised. The service was great, even the food was decent! And I'm comparing this to many other carriers I've flown overseas. I will definitely fly them again.
