Smoking allowed in Italian rental cars?
#6
I've rented cars a few times and I don't recall any noticeable smoke odor. OTOH, I last rented a car in Italy this this June/July and I don't remember noticing any "no smoking" rule when we were getting the car. But perhaps I paid no attention because I don't smoke. Picked up at FCO, returned NAP.

Most if not all rental cars are non smokers. You may ask for a car for smokers - there were some years ago.
As for addicts ... Some are addicted to being disagreeable but I know quite a few polite smokers.

I've ever had a rental car in Europe with an ashtray and a lighter.
Modern cars just don't have them anyway - you have to pay extra for a "smokers pack", and rental companies are cheapskates who won't pay for anything extra.
Why don't you contact the company you are using and ask them?

"You mean the ones who blow their smoke toward anyone else but you?"
LOL!
Or how about the ones who refuse to smoke in their rental car because they're thinking graciously about the next renter who may not be a smoker?
LOL.

There was a time when not bothering a companion in a car with their cigarette smoke meant cracking the window and pretending it helped. Maybe with the balance tipping as drastically as it has acknowledging non-smokers' rights, that has changed somewhat. But I doubt it's universal, just as good manners are not.
I also doubt every non-smoking rental car is indeed that. It would be dependent on who had it just prior. I suspect the only way to know conclusively would be to check the car one is assigned to see if there's smoke smell through the deodorant spray and ask for another if there is.

When I rented from major companies, the cars had no smoking stickers. Regardless if they featured a lighter/ 12V outlet or not.
When I rented from smaller, local enterprises it was more a mixed bag.
With everything that can happen in cars (babies urinating, drunk passengers throwing up, shoes that stepped into dog poop, spilled foods and drinks etc), I think that the possibility that someone smoked at some time in that car is not necessarily the worst possible item to consider.

I am not looking for a car in which we can smoke! I am going for one which has not been smoked in.
I will call the rental place directly since there seem to be divergent opinions here.
