Smoking allowed in Italian rental cars?

It seems to me that what they'll tell you and what the situation may be with a particular car may not correspond. Check the car you get and if you smell smoke, ask for another. Seems the simplest way to me.

In all the years I've been renting cars in Italy, I've never rented one that smelled of cigarette smoke. And nobody's nose is more sensitive to cigarette smoke than my nose.

Now, granted, I've been renting automatic vehicles for the last twenty years, and they are mostly rented by Americans, who mostly don't smoke. I can't speak for any Manual fleets, which are mostly rented by locals.
