Smallest Pretty Square

Another post has inspired this question and my vote. What is the most charming SMALL square you have seen in Europe? And for a guideline as to how small they should be to fit into this category, I would say you should restrict your vote to squares that are no larger than about 50 yards in the largest dimension. For me, the one that wins, hands down, is the incredibly scenic little square in Hallstatt, hemmed in by the mountainside, the lake, and the little inns and restaurants that surround it.
No idea, about the 50 yards, sorry, but again, Place de Furstemberg in Paris.

50 yards is around 50 meters.

50 yards by 50 yards -- think half of a football field.
Thanks, both. I figured it would be about that range, because a yard is 3 feet, isn't it?
But half a fooball field is much more concrete.
BTW, I am not good with any measures!
We enjoy Place St. Catherine in the Marais in Paris. Just a lovely pedestrian only square surrounded by restaurants and small boutiques. By the was it was featured in the Bourn Identity toward the end of the movie. When we were there last May there was a movie being filmed in the square. It must be popular for filming.

Yea, Ursula, that football field comes in very handy. When someone says the hotel is 500 yards (or meters) from the train station, most people draw a total blank. But if you think in terms of it being 5 football fields away, that means a whole lot more.

Well, Patrick, I would even prefer, if you Americans gave distances in football fields rather than in blocks.
I find meters or minutes to walk much more appropriate and informative.
I only remember in NYC, people would say it's 3 blocks down. And it was just endless.

Anyway, my favourite pretty square in Zurich is the Lindenhof.
Patrick, you must know it. It's just above the Kindli with the chess field overlooking the River Limmat.
A wonderful place on a hot summer day.

Oh, what a question! I think we will see some of the most beautiful small squares on our Engadine GTG. All the picturesque villages there have such pretty, romantic squares: Zuoz (where we will stay!), Guarda, Scuol, Poschiavo ...
