Small towns along the Main River
I'll be in Sommerach next May for an extended period to vacation.
Wondering if anyone has stayed along the Main River?
Wondering how wide the Main River is and if there are boat trips up and down the Main.
Any info about that area, other than Wurzburg would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Bamberg isn't a small town, it's a small city (smaller than Wurzburg). An absolute gem of a city barely touched by the war. Yes, there are boat trips--you can take a boat trip from the Rhein to Danube via the Main.
We had a very pleasant 2-1/2 days/3 nights in Bamberg in June of 2002.

Hi Winnie!
Donwstream from Würzburg are Karlstadt, Lohr, Wertheim and Miltenberg - upstream from Würzburg are Sommerhausen, Ochsenfurt, Marktbreit, Haßfurt and Bamberg, after which you join the Main-Danube canal to Nuremberg and beyond.
The towns I have mentioned are those marked in my German atlas as especially scenic.

Those are certainly some of the cities that I'll consider visiting while in Germany next year.
RufusTFirefly, can you tell me how big the boats are that cruise the Main to the Danube. I've been on plenty of the boats that cruise the Rhein and also on the boat that cruises the Danube from Austria to Linz. Are the boats on the Main similar in size?
Thanks

Here's a few of the many river cruise websites--same types of boats that cruise the Rhein.

There are several companies running cruises between the Rhine and the Danube via the Main. The cruise ships are the same as those that run on the Rhine. There are also several firms running day trips on the Main. Try the following:
