short Rhein River cruise (round trip)
I'll be in Germany in June and July with my husband and son. Although my parents grew up in Germany, and I've visited several times, I've never been on the Rhein! I'd like to devote several hours to doing this. Preferably, we could board the boat as far south in Germany as possible. We're staying in Bad Saeckingen, right near the Swiss border. It would be ideal to board a boat at the Southern most end of the Rhein, cruise northwards, and then come right back down again, to where we would leave our car. Do these boats make brief stops along the way for passengers to spend a little time in a village, or are they pretty much "non-stop"? We wouldn't want to go too far north, but I'm open to suggestions/ideas. Any experiences that can be shared are more than welcome! Vielen Dank!

This is the only cruise option from Bad Säckingen: http://www.bad-saeckingen-tourismus....x.shtml?schiff -unfortunately it isn't in the English version of the page, but the timetable is understandable: it is only one boat that does not even run daily.
Cruising "northwards" is not an option because the Rhine runs into East-Western direction here and a day cruise would not take you very far.

You will have to start further northwards that Bad Saeckingen and not roundtrip in the interest of time (and boredom).
Suggest catch boat upwards (north), disembark and train back home.

Pages 13-16 are the timetable and prices. You will hear from many others, but the most scenic stretch (IMO) is Bingen to Braubach at 2 hrs and 50 minutes (ex: depart Bingen 9:30 AM and arrive Braubach 12:20 PM, 10:30-13:20 0r 14:30-17:20).
Southward trips take considerably longer (river current) and are not worth it.
Choose a small town to disembark/explore/have a late lunch and train back to Bingen, where you would have left the car!
I really enjoyed Bacharach and St. Goar, and to some extent, the very touristy Ruedesheim.
