sleeping in Assisi

Is $80 a night reasonable for lodging in Assisi for a double with private bath? Do convents still take in travelers? Thanks

I don't know about the convents, but I think $80 a night is possible for a double with private bath. I stayed at Hotel Umbra (VERY conveniently located), for about 65 Euro for a single room with private bath last Fall (low season and very few tourists, relatively speaking).

Scanning just a few of the 48 hotels listed here - - http://www.venere.com/it/assisi - - I think that about 20-40% might meet your price criteria. Season will make a difference, as others have pointed out.

Best wishes,

We spent a couple of nights in March at Hotel Ideale in Assisi. Rates for double are 52 to 68 ensuite, our room had a nice balcony. Best breakfast in our two weeks in Italy. Good for those driving and a bus stop about a block away. Check out http://www.hotelideale.it/inglese/home.htm.

Rick that is great to hear about Hotel Ideale. I am staying there stating may 20th. They were the best with quick replies to my e-mails. Helen from www.italywithus.com also gave them high marks. The price was excellent also. We tried Hotel Umbra prior and they wee full. I feel we made a good choice..Thanks

We were very happy here. On arriving from S. Maria d. Angeli we by-passed the Porto Nuovo and ended up on the Viale Umberto. The hotel is just before the square and the hole in the wall is the entrance to the parking lot (you can not see into the lot just believe).

If your days in Assisi are limited don't stay by St. Maria dei Angeli (train station), but try to stay closer to the hilltop town, by the Basilica of St. Francis (north end) or the Church of St. Claire. Like Rex said, hotels rates are season-dependent, so you need to specify when are you going. I would recommend Hotel Alexander, quiet, clean, more like bedroom suites- two adjacent bedrooms kind of family oriented; about $100/night with breakfast.
