Sledding in Switzerland
Has anyone gone sledding (sledging for the Brits) in Switzerland?
How was it? Where was it? Did you feel it was dangerous?
Thanks!

Not a dumb question at all. I've sledded (rodeln) in CH, but more often in Austria. It's exhilarating and can be very tiring if you have to do a lot of walking in deep snow, and the steering can be a lot of work. It can be dangerous if you get in other people's way or if they are out of control. Don't go faster than you think you can handle! Nighttime sledding is my favorite. If there is a sledding track at a ski area, you can usually rent sleds at the bottom and take the ski lift up.

There is a sled run in Chur, about 1 ½ hours by train from Zurich. The Brambüesch ski area has a 6-km (3.7-mi) sled run. I have not done it myself. Check the Fodors book for more information.
Lisa,
It is tremendous fun and not just for kids! There are runs all over Switzerland. Some of the ones I am familiar with are: Rigi and Pilatus, just outside of Luzern, Beatenberg (near Interlaken)and Engelberg. These are 5-9 km runs and they take awhile. Sometimes (like Rigi) you will find a restaurant half way down to warm up with a cappucini or whatever. It is only as dangerous as you make it. I have never seen an accident but there aren't fences on the edge so you must be careful not to go over. Maintain control and you will be fine. The sleds with steering wheels are great and many like the old fashioned wood ones with runners. You can rent them at the top.

So...Tiger...are you interested now?!

Cheers,
Jan

Lisa -

My husband I went sledding last month in Switzerland and we had a complete blast. We'd sled from Murren to Gimmelwald, then take the cable car back up to Murren (free with Swiss Pass) and do it all over again.

There was also some good sledding above Murren - you can take your sled on the Allmendhubel and sled back down to Murren.

There's some good sledding from Furi to Zermatt too.

It wasn't dangerous per se, but we did get going pretty fast at times and because we had sleds without any steering, it took awhile to figure out how to steer using our feet, etc. Needless to say, we were pretty sore the next day, but we had a great time.

Thanks for the input guys - you gave me courage.
We were in Davos last weekend watching the sled run - looked like a BLAST. I think we'll try Kandersteg this weekend.

I was just a bit tentative cuz my husbands secretary broke her leg on a toboggan run last year.
For sled runs I found this site:

www.myswitzerland.com

Click country of origin: USA (for english)
Then click "Snow reports"
Then click 'tobogganing'.

This will note what sled runs are open, difficulty, length, vertical drop etc.

It shows no sled runs open around Zurich - it has been too warm. Last year there was a run on the Uteliberg (walkable to the top from Zurich - but if hauling a sled easier by train), but this year no snow.

Area mentioned aboveilatus would be an easy day trip. This past weekend my husband & I took the train to Kandersteg for the day and sledded - great fun! And no broken bones. Full sun (Yeah) and berghauses all over to wet your whistle.

Lisa - How was Kandersteg? We are considering it as a destination next winter.
Mary -
We really liked Kandersteg as it was small and very easy to get about (we don't have - or need- a car).
Skiiers were out in full force, but some of the runs were closed as it has been so warm this season.

There is LOTS of cross country skiing there, many of the 'wanderweg' paths are cleared and open if you just feel like hiking, and there is a covered sports arena if you want to ice skate.

Don't know your time frame, but more than 3 days there would probably be too long. It is a SMALL town.

Also an easy train hop to Thun, Brig, Interlaken, Bern.
We went for the day from Zurich.
