Ski Garmish in early Dec?

Is Early December too early to go alpine skiing in Garmish? If yes, what about the Alps in Austria? Thanks

No! Was just in Garmisch a couple weeks ago and there was already snow on the mountains! And my friends just went skiing on the Stubietal (sp?) glacier outside of Innsbruck this past weekend.
Sia

Heather:

I just want to say that I love Garmish! If you go, have dinner in the Frauendorfer! Tell me all about it since it looks like this will be another year that I cannot return to that beautiful city!(sniff-sniff)
JOHN

Heather, I'm afraid that early December is iffy for the German and Austrian Alps, unless you ski on the glaciers. February is really high season, but you might get lucky with an early snow down low on the mountains. Check www.zugspitze.de for Garmisch conditions (right now, almost all lifts are closed, but cable cars to the glacier are open). Other locations iwll have the same info on their local sites. Good luck!

I was born and raised in Garmisch. Zugspitze will open at the end of the month. At the beginning of December you will only be able to ski on the Platt which is not very big, just two t-bars. Unless they get lots of snow and open up a couple of other lifts. That time of year, Stubai by Innsbruck (1 hr from GAP) is ok but I prefer Ischgl, two hrs from GAP.

Ischgl! Yes! I was only thinking Tyrol but that's a wonderful suggestion. It and Galtur are high enough that they should have plenty snow and they're great ski villages. Good idea, bina.

Early Dec. is way to early to take a chance on good skiing conditions. I used to live there. You might get lucky or you might waste your time.

I will be in Munich at the end of November and would also like to ski nearby. Ann, Bina, or anyone else--can you tell me if Ischgl, Galtur or Stubai are easily accessible from Munich via rail?

Thanks,
K.

K, I've always driven, but do know Munich to Innsbruck is an easy 2-hour rail trip. Skiing on the glacier is possible now; check the terrific Austrian website http://homes.tiscover.com/innsbruck to get the latest snow/lifts information. Good luck!
