And Claude, one thing I failed to mention is that Italian men are very kind in helping single women travellers (and NO I am not talking about their flirting etc.). I am talking about the fact that they are very kind and considerate of their mothers and consequently this mannerism is displayed to other women.

I am referring in general to the man behind the hotel desk, the waiter, etc. Even the policemen can be very nice when you need directions etc. And since you said you are connecting with your daughter in Paris I would also like to comment that in Italy older women are treated with kind respect and consideration, again I believe because of the love for their mamma's and nonna (grandmother).

I'm a dissident on the taxi issue, although I can understand why people like to take them. But I felt fine not taking any in Italy, and was happy to save the money.

I have to agree on the kind hotel staff in Italy - that's what I had at each place.

Venice is only about 5 hours and a bit from Rome if you take the Eurostar.

WOW! Have just returned to this site and read all your responses.

You people are wonderful. So generous with your advice!

I certainly have much food for thought and will let you know what I decide!

Orvieto is included in the tour. If any of you would like to browse that it is www.livingitaly.com.

Claude, Is this the 14 day excursion? Wow! It sounds fantastic! I can't wait to hear what you think of it.

And just to clarify and an earlier response by somebody else: Florence is only 1 hour 35 minutes away by Eurostar.
