Single guy in Europe. Where to go and what to avoid?
I'll be cruising over the pond for a visit to my ancestral land, heh heh. Just one single guy lookin for a wild time! (That is my best Joe Cool impersonation--repeat the paragraph using a suave accent!).

Actually will be going to Europe a single fellow in May. London, Paris and Rome--hopefully 5 days each.

Aside from the usual tourist things any other suggestions? I am athletic-swim and golf-and great fun. Is it easy to meet single ladies in Europe--okay, I know if you can meet them here you can meet them there-is being an American an attraction over there. In other words do I pack alot of aftershave?

Also, are golf courses public or private there. Do I need to make tee times in advance?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but from my experience and knowledge as an American girl, it's really easy for American girls to meet Italian guys, but not for American guys to meet Italian girls. Italian women tend to be aloof in public, travel in groups, are not approachable, and think American guys are dorks. Italian guys on the other hand, think American women are easy. Not true in my case, but I'm not going to complain about all the attention! Good luck anyway!

I can't advise you much on the women thing, being one myself. YOu haven't said your age, which I think may make a difference as to where you go to have a "wild time" -- I'm guessing you are in your 20s?

Okay, I just was going to tell you a little about golf, the little I know -- I think there are both public and private courses, just like anywhere. I know there is a public one at Disneyland Paris with reasonable fees and you can find out about it on their web site, I'm sure. I'm not sure how playing at Disneyland will fit your Joe Cool image, heh heh heh. There aren't any golf courses in Paris itself, I'm pretty sure, so you have to go out to the suburbs to do that (far burbs). There is one at Fontainebleau, for example.

If you want to do athletic things in Paris itself, you would find it easier to do tennis, squash or swimming.

I'm sure you can meet girls if you go out to clubs or something, but they might be American and I'm not implying anything beyond meeting them or dancing and talking. I don't think being American is any special attraction in itself in those particular countries, but what do I know, if anything I'd expect the opposite. You can find out places to go in Paris in www.timeout.com, www.novaplanet.com, www.danse-a-2.com/Paris, www.sortir.fr, www.parissi.com, and www.alexandre.polozoff.com/mainindex (go to Paris Nightlife section)
Some of those may be only French, not sure

If you really want to play golf there, here is a French web site I found that gives you public courses by area and fees, hours, etc:www.golflounge.com

London has a number of public courses - e.g Richmond would be one of the nicest.
For single guys - Tiger Tiger near Piccadilly is a huge pub which is a big pick up joint on Fridays especially. Down Mexico Way Friday night - 6pm, Latin dance classes for beginners - 70% girls; huge drinking session from 12pm to about 3pm on Sundays in a great big shed behind Kings cross station - session called "The Church" It is a massive drinking binge for Australians, South Africans, Kiwis and Brits. If you like girls who may not be the most elegant (the elegant ones go once and may well be embarrassed about being Kiwi or whatever)and love anthem rock music - Bon Jovi, Midnight Oil etc - very Australian oriented Rock music - then you will love this place. Get out at Kings Cross (I think it is still there, check in Aussie free magazine called TNT as it has had to move over the years) and follow the crowd. All beer drinking - just drop the empties on the floor. Get there early - hundreds go, and if you are late you will not get in. It is generally a good natured, but very drink crowd by 230pm.

I had to laugh when Nick mentioned The Church. Not because I think it is a poor recommendation but because I have never heard it mentioned here before and I recall my own visit there.

Definitely go there, you'll have a good time. But it is a very, very casual place and definitely not "classy" by any means. And they even have a stripper or two show up, and at the end of the day at least a few people get up on stage and lose their shirts. It is a mixed crowd of male and female Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans, with a few North Americans and Brits thrown in. Be prepared that there may be a few anti-American songs sung (but light-hearted and in a humorous way, not aggressive). You have to buy three huge beers at a time, which they give you in plastic bags and the toilets are porta-potties outside. It is fun though!

Other than that, while in London I would suggest the Soho area which has some cool bars and the women are less apt to be uptight there (unlike in the City) and open to meeting new people. Stay away from the "professionals" in Soho tho'!

xxx - you are right, most contributions from Europe are more for Schloss Neuschwanstein, but not many single guy requests either. I never saw plastic bags being given out for the beers (in quite a lot of visits in my single days)- the big groups just piled the 6 packs up on the floor on top of each other or you carried them holding the plastic ring - or hanging them from your belt. Remember buying 3 at a time was via the ticket purchase at the door as well as inside - cheaper than buying one at a time. forgot to recommend, do not bother wearing overly clean clothes!

I suggest you always wear alot of that aftershave. It drives us nuts. Also wear white athletic shoes and jeans everywhere. Speak very loudly, be rude to waitstaff and make disparaging remarks about locals. The women will know you're American and will flock to you.

Dear Jordon

How about just being yourself. Repect the locals and go in and have a pint at a local pub. See all the tourist things that interest you and you be suprised at the people you will meet. Have no expectations other than having a trip of a life time and it will work.

Nick, you're right. It's not mandatory to buy three beers at a time at The Church but is more cost-effective. I was there a few years ago and they were doled out in plastic bags though. Quite handy. I also second your recommendation not to wear good clothes! Be sure to wear sturdy footwear too because your tootsies are likely to get stomped on more than once.

As for American men not being attractive to European women, I don't think that's necessarily the case. When I worked in London, I noticed that the American men there didn't have too much trouble meeting women. It has more to do with the person you are than where you're from. Like another poster said, be yourself and have a great time!

Hi Jordan: I don't think it's that difficult to meet nice Italian women (in my opinion, they look great and are warm and friendly and do their share of staring too). For stuff to do, check out www.timeout.com You can then click on the cities you're visiting and download some great information that's pretty up to date. Have a great trip!

If it is female companionship that is highest on your list, I suggest you replan your trip and head for eastern europe rather than western europe.

In EE your being an american actually works for you rather than against you. For several reasons, there is an imbalance of the genders in EE. This causes a situation where the women in EE are much more approachable than they are in the west. Plus they haven't been treated too well by their EE men, so they are most pleased to be treated halfway decent by western men.

Plus they are generally better looking, and for sure more feminine, than women in western europe, so that doesn't hurt either.

Try EE, and you will be hooked on the women.

Al
