As a New York native I feel compelled to contribute to an already enlighted audience with the following tidbit: the word "Kill" comes from a Dutch word that refers to a stream or wet area. It does attest to the earlier Dutch settlements on this region. Fishkill, Wynantskill, Peekskill are just some of many "kill" towns.

There is a nearby town called Cohoes. Guess where the "clever" ones place an "n"....

In Perth, Western Australia there is a suburb called Innaloo. This may or may not mean something to Americans. In British slang a loo is a toilet. The word comes from the french lieu=place.

The "politician" I referred to as being from Idaho was not some local fellow running for tax collector or anything. I learned by accident that he is Michael Crapo, US Senator from Idaho, who is quite popular in his home state. I think his office deserves a high measure of respect. So I would like to withdraw my reference.

Fun Forum:

As well as Innaloo in Perth Western Australia, we also have Upper Swan - say that as in up a swan and the mind boggles.

Sorry to be boring and to ruin a good story with the truth ... but, honestly there is no Fucking, Australia as posted by lindo or Tittibong.

Loved the rippafarta and we also got a laugh from the exit signs on the autobahns in germany - the aushfarts

Just to protect my credibility here: yes, maybe there's no place called Fucking, but I distinctly remember seeing it in a travel brochure, and a picture of the place sign with a tourist. It was a couple of years ago, and they did say that the townspeople wanted to change the name, so maybe they did already. Just to let you know I wasn't intentionally not telling the truth!

Fucking is a hamlet in Upper Austria, somewhere between Braunau and Salzburg. See

http://www.htl-hl.ac.at/l-students/3340/fucking.htm

for reference. There is also a village named Petting in Bavaria ( not far from Fucking, actually ).

Just love this topic. In contrast to the previous post, for those who don't want to go all the way, Walt Disney World is near Kissimee.

Elvira: how about Athol, also in your neck of the woods; that always brings a few comments from visitors. And Meredith, there is indeed a Dick Sweat in New Hampshire politics.
I have been repeating Woolloomooloo ever since I ate there two weeks ago. Now I learn that I may be pronouncing it incorrectly. Darn! If you like funky, try it next time you're in Avignon.

For those of you up on their German there is in Austria a town called Moesen. It is not far from Nabeln.

In Western Australia the Premier (Governor)'s name is Richard Court. At the recent Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney there was an effigy of him grimacing with pain, which read: is Dick Court in the door?

Though we're really getting off the track here, there's also a State politician in NSW whose name is Richard Face...

Just curious--what is funny about a town named after the Biblical figure Nimrod?

Rufus - "Nimrod" means "dork", "loser", "douchebag" in modern teen parlance.

And as for that little village in Austria, please see:

In Lancashire there is the town of Ramsbottom, known by its two districts; Lower Ramsbottom - and, well you can guess the other!
