Sicily: need apt. for 6
3 couples are going to Sicily in May- never been there. We are thinking the East coast. We found a place in Donnalucata, near Scicli at the bottom of the island, but it looks almost too cheap! Does anyone know this area? Can anyone suggest a good area to look? Does anyone know of apartment or house that is reasonable?
Thanks

I can ask around for you. How cheap is "too cheap"? We are renting an apartment North of Syracuse right on the water (3 bedroom 2 bath) for 700E a month... and that's probably too much! But, we wanted it. We live in Sicily and wanted a place for friends and family to spend time (no room in our house) plus a nice weekend home by the beach.

Yes. Sicily is much cheaper. Although you can certainly find hotels that will charge 300E on up. But for the most part (outside of Taormina) you will pay much less.
400Euro seems about right. May is not a high tourist season. July and Aug are when things go through the roof.
Also, where you are staying is pretty far off the tourist path. Which, depending on your travel style could be a good thing.
I have never been to Scicli, but I have been to Noto, Modica (famous for its chocolate-yum!), Ragusa, and Syracuse... all somewhat in that area. I found them all very nice places and fun outings. But you are very far from Taormina, Etna, etc. It would be a pretty long day trip. Will you also travel to other parts of the island, or do you plan to stay put? Again, there is something to be said for just enjoying one place and enjoying it well. Also, in Sicily just about EVERYTHING closes during the afternoon. Which can really cut into your site seeing time. There have been many times we drive all morning and arrive in a town just when they are closing up for riposo
The better option is to drive during riposo and get into town late afternoon when things are starting to open again, then spend the night, enjoy the town the next morning and head to the next place after lunch when things close again.
As an aside, I just read an article on Donnalucato and the St. Joseph Ride and Cuttlefish Festival. It was last weekend and we didn't make it. But maybe next year. Can't say I'm a big fan of cuttlefish though! I will keep my eyes open for other festivals in that area.
