Siciliy: Scicli- Ragusa
I'm having a dificult time finding a place to stay in Ragusa. While I've been searching I came across another Baroque town nearby- Scicli. Anyone know anything about it? I found this B&B call Loggia dell'Acanto- it looks really nice. Input would be greatly appreciated.

scicli is gorgeous. i have a friend who lives just on the outskirts. it's a really really pretty town, pretty much entirely baroque in the centre because the town was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt in (I think) 1693.
are you hiring a car? i'm not sure how good public transport is in the area. but i'm not saying it's definitely bad, as i've never tried because my friend drives (badly!!).

We stayed at the Eremo della Giubiliana which is in the countryside a few miles from Ragusa and it was lovely. http://www.eremodellagiubiliana.it/ We didn't find that Ragusa detained us for more than a couple of hours - IMO the best thing about it was the view of it from across the valley.

I just noticed I mispelled Sicily. (Must be the influence of spelling Scicli.) VickiH have you ever been to Scicli? Your description of it makes it sound like the place to stay in the area. Any recommendations for places to eat in Scicli? I was planning on driving from Siracusa to Ragusa and spending the night in the area before heading to Agrigento. For anyone who is interested here's the link to Loggia dell'Acanto-http://www.loggiadellacanto.it/.
80 Euros for a double. I'll post a description of Scicli and the B&B when I return since there are no other posts about it.
Bob- could not find Pension Diana in Noto, but I was going to daytrip to Noto from Siracusa.
Caroline- are you from Edinburgh? There are some really good Italian restaurants there. I took my wife for a wonderful birthday dinner at an Italian restaurant at the base of Edinburgh Castle (I don't remember the name). As for Eremo della Giubiliano it's already booked the night that fits my itinerary (and it's very pricey).

Hi netstar. Yes, I am indeed from Edinburgh. Would that be Il Castello on Castle Terrace ? (How much more castle-y could it get ?!?) I haven't been myself but my hairdresser went there on Christmas Day (!) & said it was really good.
My current favourites are La Partenope on Dalry Road for the best seafood I've had outside southern Italy & Centotre on George Street for everything else. Looking forward to trying the new La Favorita on Leith Walk : it's owned by the same guy as Vittoria's, has wood-burning ovens & is supposed to do the best pizza in town. Mmm... feeling hungry now !

i have been to scicli, yes. i've always stayed at my friend's house, though, so i can't recommend you any good hotels or anything i'm afraid. nor do i know any good restaurants, because my friend's mum and auntie would have been most offended if i hadn't eaten their wonderful cooking! . i do know that there are lots of little bars etc where you can get a lovely panino or similar for lunch and a couple of drinks in the evening. i'm useless at place names i'm afraid - i can picture all these little places very clearly in my head, but as i was with a local i didn't have to remember how to get to anything, so i didn't really look! but just wander about, it's lovely. parts of it are sort of pedestrianised. 'sort of', in that mopeds seem to think they're allowed too!
it's worth walking up the hill to the old church - all that's left standing of the old village before the earthquake. i can't for the life of me remember what it's called! (told you i was useless). but you can't miss it, it overlooks the town. quite a walk up the hill, but nice to do in the evening maybe (but before it gets dark!). i think the local paper

sorry! accidentally somehow managed to hit "post"
anyway, i think the local paper lists arranged walking tours etc - i know we did one, much to the amusement of my friend and her sister!
there are a few nice beaches in the area as well - that whole stretch of coast is very pretty. somewhere between scicli and marina di ragusa there's a sort of nature reserve place at the mouth of the river irminio - worth seeing if you've got time.

Yes. It was Il Castello. I recommend it highly. We were ther two years ago. Sit back and relax. You'll think your in a Trattoria in Rome. It's traditional Italian cooking. I also heard there are 15,000 Italians living in Scotland and I think they are all in the restaurant business.
Scotland, by the way, is one of my all time favorite places. The drive from Oban to Loch Lomand late in the afternoon with the mist coming off the Lochs was mystical. The view of the Castle of Clan McGregor on Mull from the Ferry alone was worth the ride. And we had our best meal in Scotland in an inn in Baloch. The apple sticky toffee cake was not to be believed.

3 weeks ago we stayed at Hotel Montreal in Ragusa: 8 San Giuseppe, corner of Corso Italia. Tel: 0932 621133 www.chshotels.com/ragusa.htm Parking in their garage: 6 E per day. As I recall they charged somewhere around 90 E for a double w. large pivate bathroom.B & B. We liked it a lot. It was only a "stones throw' by car to the old town of Ragusa Ibla, which was the reason we had come there.
Check out the travel guide "Frommer's Sicily", where you will find info on other hotels in Ragusa. We rented the smallest car possible, with foldable side mirrrors, in order to get thru the very narrow streets in some of these old towns. Enjoy your trip!
