Should passports be carried around with us?

It's about assessing risk. Personally, I think the risk of dropping or losing a passport whilst out, or of being pick-pocketed (though low), is probably higher than the risk of someone nicking it from your hotel room.
I've never been asked for ID, other than at point of entry into a country, anywhere in the world. So again, the risk of losing or leaving behind a passport being carried around all day, versus getting told off by police/officials for not having full documentation on me seems a no brainer.
And I'm always amused by the example of needing to leave the country in a mad rush in the event of terrorist activity etc. Do people carry round their suitcase all day, everywhere, just in case?

If any hotel is stealing passports, I don't think it will be a secret for long.
I am reminded of all of those matrons who carry all of their most valuable jewels in their handbag so they won't get stolen. How come they end up in the news so often?
