I vaguely remember a post sometime back about shipping luggage and other big things. If I can find that post, I will post it as I thought with that service you could state when and what time to have it delivered and it was world wide. If so, maybe that would work out. Have it delivered the day after you arrive. If anyone else remembers that post, maybe they could help locate it too.

Here is a link I found but the post was in the lounge www.intercargo.com. It's a recent post but I know there was one a year or more ago as I checked it out.

Unless you're a professional, with specialized equipment, consider renting what you need when you arrive. Why go through all the hassle!

Mailing your skiing gear seems like a good way to pay lots of money for shipping and then still having to rent skiing gear.

I don't think VAT and import duty would be charged on used clothes; the equipment I'm not sure about, but if it's definitely and obviously not new that might not be an issue. (But I wouldn't risk it myself.)

well, if you have to fly carry-on, I can see why you can't take them. I still would rent rather than paying to ship them to/from France and dealing with those hassles and potential loss/damage. You usually get discounts on rentals for longer terms, also (like 5 days instead of 1). I don't know about France, but in the US, renting all equipment (but helmet, I do like my own and rental helmets are way overpriced) only costs about $35-40 a day.

For example, places in Chamonix seem to only charge about 40 euro a week (which does seem to low, not sure what the term pack ski means), eg,
http://www.chamonix.com/sportmarche-...397654,en.html

This place charges about 20 euro a day, seems more reasonable, and you get discounts for booking online in advance http://nord.intersport-chamonix.com/

now maybe they aren't going to Chamonix, but I imagine those prices are typical

If there's one piece of ski equipment I absolutely wouldn't rent, it's boots.

Could you ship by cargo the boots/helmets on the same carrier as you're flying and then pick up your package at the cargo offices at the airport after you arrive? Might an employee even get a discount?

I know United lets you pick the flight you want the package to travel on. But, even if you were fairly confident about getting on a particular flight, I wouldn't use the same one for cargo because I assume there would be a delay between landing and the availability of the package for pick-up. If you decide to look into this, make sure you ask how long that delay would be, how long they can hold the package, etc.

The very thought of dealing with all the possibilities of shipping this is mind boggling, not to mention the language issue (perhaps), and if they aren't there, where are they, and we have to come back to get them, etc. etc and so forth, to quote Yul Brynner as the King!!
As for boots--DDIL LOVED her boots she rented (and she lives in CO and was due some new ones). Who knows!! LOL

I think folks have missed the most concerning part of this....OP has rented an apartment and is using what appear to be buddy passes. OP will be doing good to get to apartment on time.

I think there is a possibility that you could spend your valuable vacation time trying to track down a package. I would not take that chance. Also I would think the cost would be very high. I would just rent and as mentioned wear what you can.
