I've never stayed there, but I now the area well. It's indeed a nice area, although not very central.

Via del Corso further south is a busy commercial street, but just south of Piazza del Popolo, it's a narrow pedestrianized street with little shops and restaurants. In the summer, there are often lots of people on the street, and Piazza del Popolo itself attracts a lot of tourists.

thanks - we will be there for 12 nights in December; it appears to be a reasonable walk to most sites since we will be strolling and not out to break any land speed records. Taxis are always an option as well!

That's one of my favorite areas to stay in Rome. You'll have access to taxis at Pz. del Popolo, plus the Metro at Spagna and Flaminio, plus busses on the surrounding streets (surrounding the Tridente, that is). Really, I love this area.

I've eaten in several restaurants on that street and on the adjacent streets, but I didn't make a note of the names. To be honest, I don't go to Rome for the food; I just look for decent restaurants at reasonable prices.

If this is your first visit to Rome, I'd look for a more central location, somewhere around the Piazza Navona/Campo dei Fiori/Spanish Steps. More to see around this area with easy walkability.

Also Gusto Wine Bar/et al is nearby - I think people have mixed feelings about it (maybe too touristy?) but in January we found it a pleasant place for a glass of wine.

I highly recommend getting both Elizabeth Minchilli's and Katie Parla's Rome food apps. I got them for my iPhone and they are indispensable.

The electric bus 117 runs down this street all the way to the Colosseum and on to S. Giovanni in Laterano. The return route goes in front of the Spanish Steps.

Is Via Del Corso 12 the actual address or just the name of the apartment?

It's only a 15 minute walk to Piazza Navona if that is the actual address.

This is not our first trip to Rome. In previous trips, we stayed at the Westin but decided to stay in an apartment this time as the boys are older and separate bedrooms/spaces would be a good thing. Walking will not be an issue - we hoofed it from the westin to the colosseum several times during an August visit. However, rain may figure into this trip so having taxis near by is a plus. The plan is to have breakfast in the apartment each day and eat dinners out (mostly). So far, we have reservations at Fortunato, Il SanLorenzo and Rosciolo.

We have stayed near the Piazza del Poppolo area 4 times because we really like the area., we usually walked everywhere but we have used the really nice electric mini bus along Via Di Ripetta & Via del Babbuino. We used the underground passage with 2 escalators that connects Via del Babbuino vertically up to the Villa Borghese park & museum. Good supermarket inside that underground passage between the two escalators. We like attending Sunday mass at the twin Santa Maria churches at the piazza. We enjoyed having lunches or a simple cappuccino in the mornings inside Hotel de Russie just to escape into an oasis away from noisy chaotic Rome.

One of my favorite winebars to eat dinner at is Life, my favorite must order dish is the seabass carpaccio (€10), smallish winebar but very nice modern interior with a full menu and plenty of friendly waiters to help you. http://www.ristorantelife.it/

A nice vegetarian restaurant: Osteria Margutta, charming interior, we enjoyed the mushroom 4 ways plate and our pasta dishes were very good, very attentive service. Unfortunately outdoor dining is not a choice for you. http://www.osteriamargutta.it/

I have only peeked into Gusto which consists of 4 different venues interconnected including a cheese bar, a good number of people seemed to be enjoying their apperitivo free appetizers from the bar ( pizza al taglio and the kind). We prefer more service oriented places.

There are numerous good restaurants & trattoria in the area to enjoy, just avoid the ones near the piazza di Spagna. We always checked Tripadvisor, not so much or their rating but rather as a precaution against really bad tourist traps.

For example we think Ottello della Concordia is not a bad place at all if you are looking for inexpensive good pasta dishes. It's a big place, not much service, but it's decent if you're going as a big family for a cheap dinner. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...ome_Lazio.html

There is a simple looking but great bakery on Via del Ripetta toward the Cavour bridge that makes all kinds of cookies & cakes that are very typical Italian and incredibly delicious. I can't remember the name but it's on a corner against one of the alleys. We would buy a ton of classic cookies and semi soft cookies/cakes by the kilogram and have them in the apartment for breakfast and tea time throughout our stay. It really made us feel that we were in Italy.
