Searching for info. on B&B's in Switz.
Hi! My husband and I are planning our first trip to Switzerland at the end of May. We have received alot of info. on hotels from several sources but very little on B&B's in Switzerland. We were hoping to find quaint, moderate priced logging that would have a real regional flair. Any suggestions? We are planning on staying 3 nights in the Bern, Lucern area, 3-4 nights in Interlauken or surrounding area, and probably two nights in the Montreux area. We don't mind spending the four star prices if we must but we were hoping to find a more resonable price with alot of charm.
Also, my husband wants to make reservations for our first night and then find hotels as we go. Do we need to make reservations ahead of our trip or can we plan as we go?
One more question. Has anyone out there done any European travel while pregnant? I will be four months pregnant during this trip. I am interested in any additional advice on traveling out of the country while carrying an extra passenger.
Thanks for any information. This board has been a great resource.
Krysta

This is a great web site for small family owned hotels all over Switzerland. www.rooms.ch
I used it last year to find a hotel and it worked out very well. I would think that rooms would be quite available the end of May. I was in Wengen in early July and there were plenty of rooms as the season hadn't quite started.

Krysta:

We were in Switzerland last August and stayed at Hotel Staubuch which is run like a B & B. The owners are a wonderful young couple, she is Swiss, he's American. The rooms are small but comfortable and the rates are great and Lauterbrunnen is near Interlaken, Wengen and some of the other towns you probably want to visit. The hotel looks out on the Staubuch falls which is lit up at night. We could lie in our bed and look at the falls or sit on the balcony--- it was very romantic. If you stay there, tell Craig and Corrine "Hello" from the Tuckers.

Have you tried Rick Steves book "The Best of Germany, Austria and Switzerland"? We used it almost exclusively and loved his B&B suggestions.

As a side not his suggested hike in the Interlaken area on the (sp?) Kleine-Scheinige was absolutely stunning and the easiest mountain hike you can imagine. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Drop me a line if I can be of any help.

My mom and dad traveled around the world while she was pregnant with me in 1964/5. They had to, because one of the places they wanted to go was Moscow. Because of the cold war, the visa took along time to go thru, and when they were ok'd to go, she was pregnant. They figured it was then or never. So they did it.

My mom said she had a wonderful pregnancy. They were on trains most of the time. My mom is also a very easy going individual who does not stress. When the time got close, they were in Moscow and thought it best to get to a less controversial area. The advice was to go to Finland, were the best hopitals were. And that is where I was born.

Krysta, I was just about to recommend Karen Brown's paperback on Swiss Inns, so I'll second the suggestion above. Don't know if it covers all the places she describes in her book-- but her emphasis is on "regional flair", so it should be just what you are looking for. I think my budget was tighter than yours, but I can recommend quaint towns: the tiny St. Saphorin on Lac Leman (Montreux's lake), tucked among the vineyards -- plenty of boat trips to dandy places; Thun and Brienz on the lakes that bear their names (between Bern and Lucerne). You've chosen several absolutely gorgeous areas, so I don't think you can go wrong with places to stay. Again, Karen Brown's the source for you!
