Scottish WeddingTraditions

Hey There:

I am starting to plan my wedding & my ancestry is Scottish. I am not going to have an entire Scottish wedding theme but I would really love to have a Scottish tradition thrown in to make my own little twist. Since I can't have the whole Highland Rig... Any suggestions I would greatly appreciate. Thanks!

Whisky should help....

Assuming you're having a meal at the reception, what about (not haggis, that might be going a bit far) cranachan for a dessert?

Is it possible to get some heather for good luck (or is that just an English perception?)

Congratulations, SwtJorJaGAL.

Supposedly white heather is a good luck omen, and there are many fine songs that could be part of the plan - Robert Burns, Mairi's Wedding, many others...

Then I was going to suggest planning for the fight and making arrangements for drunks at the reception. But maybe that's too traditional for you...

It's also very Glasgow, Gardy. Not fair play....

The terribly middle class way to get married in Scotland today is:-

When bride leaves home, Father throws a handful of coins to teh local kids- a scamble (actually, I'm pretty sure this practice is out of date- I can't remember the last time I saw a scramble)

Unlucky for Bride and groom to meet on teh wedding day outsidethe church. Unlucky for Groom to see the dress before the bride gets to the church. Unlucky to marry in May; unlucky to wear green.

Church wedding. Photographer takes photos of all guests as they arrive. Piper outside optional.

Short service- 20-25mins. Two hymns/psalms; two readings. The Old Hundredth is a favourite in my neck of the woods.

Bride wears white; Groom and all men in the wedding party wear the full rig. White heather in lapels.

Bride also does the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" routine.

Bride and groom have rice (for fertility) thrown over them, instead of confetti. Small child should give the bride and groom a horseshoe for luck

Major break after service while 8000 photies are took. Guests mill around drinking champagne or cheap lookalike.

Meal. Top table usually piped in. No traditional menu as such. Toasts by Father of the bride, groom, and best man.

Ceilidh dance. Bride and Groom lead the dancing, round here in a Grand March.

At some point the cake is ritually cut. It's usually in more than one layer, and the top layer is put away for the christening cake.

Bride does the thing with the flowers. There should be presents for the bridesmaid and the best man. There should be "favours" for the ladies (best favour I ever got was a spurtle)

Bride and Groom leave early.

Prior to the wedding there is the traditional blackening. There has been a long thread on it already on here.

The night before (usually nowadays the weekend before), the groom and his buddies go out for a stag party; the bride has a hen night.

On arrival at the marital home, groom carries bride over the threshold
