Scotland: where to stay.
We have 14 nights to stay. I realize this is not a lot of time. I realize we cannot see it all by a long shot. This is our first trip.
So far we are spending three of our precious nights in Edinburgh, three in Portee, and three in Callander. We chose this last stop because we will drive to the airport on the early afternoon for our flight home. These reservations are booked and have been for some time.
Now I am stuck.
If from a long list of must sees we pick the Highlands and the castle trail, is it totally not doable to pick a location where we can do both of these areas from one place to stay. We have five remaining nights.
if not, please give me suggestions on two locations for these two areas. But if it is at all possible I would like to just stay just one place.
i realize distances are deceiving on a map. We have a car booked also.
Thanks so much. We are traveling in August. I just cannot get a handle on locations

We are arriving and departing from Edinburgh. Our bookings are confirmed in Edinburgh upon arrival for three nights.. Then the five night gap And then confirmed reservations in Portree for three nights and then Callander for three nights and then return to the US.
we like historical sights and nature.
We do not mind driving distances but want to be realistic. We understand the going is slow on those roads.

If it was me -- and having Edinburgh and Skye set as the bookends for your five nights, i'd lean towards one of these three options.
• One night in Fife for St Andrews, the fishing villages, and maybe Falkland. 3 nights on Deeside -- such as perhaps Ballater. This would let you see Glamis and Dunnottar en route up then two days for the Castle trail area/general Aberdeenshire. Followed by one night somewhere near Inverness. I know this is building in a couple of one nighters but the driving would not be onerous and it would let you see a LOT. This would be my preference even though I usually avoid one night stops.
• If Fife is not of interest -- then 3 nights on Deeside, and two nights near Inverness. This would be the base for a lot of Highland scenery, a whisky distillery or two (though you could hold off til Talisker on Skye), Culloden/Clava Cairns, etc.
• 2 nights somewhere like Dunkeld or Pitlochry, then three nights near Inverness -- though this would miss all of the Castle Trail area.

This is what we finally settled
This is what we planned on for our visit.
Starting in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh, three nights. Doubletree by Hilton. Our son gifted us with his points for that stay.
Pick up a car at EDI.
Three nights in Ballater. The Auld Kirk.
Two nights near Inverness. The Antfield Guest House.
Three nights in Portree. The Skeabost Hotel
Three nights in Callander. The Roman Camp CountryHouse.
Return to EDI for our 12:30 flight
My husband has been furiously reading every guide book he can. I hope we can get a taste with this itinerary. If not, we can return.
I hope the hotels are reasonably comfortable.
Thanks

Your hotels are all fine.
>>Skeabost Hotel<<
Lucky you
>>Roman Camp CountryHouse<<
Double lucky you
(If your son has more points to throw around - there is a wonderful Hilton Property in Ballater - http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/uni...RGV/index.html )

you made good choices!
The Roman Camp is just fabulous and you are able to walk into town for dinner or shopping. Great golf at the Callender course if you are a golfer.
You will have a great taste of Scotland and you will soon return!

Thanks so much to all. It is so nice to have people give me a heads up on the accommodations. I really tried to be careful when planning the hotels. A couple of these were actually what we consider splurge worthy.

For a splurge, the latest hot property in Deeside is the renovated Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar - complete with their own Picasso, apparently!

Could be pricey, however.

My son picked the hotel in Edinburgh to use with his points. Yesterday I looked at the property pricing. Yikes!
Rooms for our stay are going for around £400 per night.
So I am sure the one in Braemar would be way beyond our budget. I will not even look.
BTW. The room in Edinburgh does NOT include breakfast. That is £13pp. And for another £20 we can have a room with a view of the castle.
All I know is there are a lot of people in the world with a lot more money than I to spend on a hotel room. So I am really grateful and I am sure we will enjoy it without trying to get too used to those kinds of digs.
