Scotland Road Trip

We are starting to plan a 15 day, give or take, road trip in a rental car around Scotland, starting in Glasgow. We have been to Edinburgh/Stirling/St Andrew and Ayr on previous trips. We are seniors who like visiting national trust properties - working castles over ruins. Walking treks need to be fairly flat and short. So how does Aberdeen, Inverness, Isle of Skye, Oban and Glasgow loop sound with 2 or 3 nights in each? What "musts" to see along the way? Going in April/May. Should we cut out any of these places? Thanks for all suggestions.

I'd give Inverness a miss, certainly for any longer than an afternoon, as there's not that much there to see. I notice that you omit Mull and I'd certainly substitute Mull for Inverness. I love Tobermory and Iona.

You should also recognize that April/May in the Highlands can be quite wet and windy, and often some of the sights are socked in for days. These conditions will be more prevalent on the west coast and in the Hebrides, but as long as you're okay with that, then by all means include Oban and Mull.

Although it's not dramatically different, the east coast tends to be a bit drier in the spring, which would argue for more time in, say, Aberdeenshire, Angus and Fife. And, if you haven't experienced it, it's a terrific time to visit the Scottish Borders and the Northumberland coast - Alnwick, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne (Holy Island) as well as the coast between the English border and Edinburgh.

Before recommending specific routes, maybe you could indicate where else in Scotland or the North of England you've visited.
