PS On the last evening while flicking through the visitor book we discovered that there were sea kayaks in the shed - bugger!

Overall, I would heartily recommend this area of the country, which is spectacularly beautiful. If you think it's too far to go, I would urge you to reconsider, because the views are so beautiful that the journey becomes part of the experience, rather than just a means to a destination.

Thanks to Mr M for finding the cottage, sorting out rough intinararies for each day, doing most of the driving, providing back rubs and tea on demand, downloading films to watch for rainy evenings in, putting up with endless subsidy jokes, and generally being good company.

Though two marks off - one for the ungentlemanly act of eating the only blackcurrant glacier fruit in the bag. And another for missing the hairy coos - you were wrong, Tommy - they never came back. ;-)

Hi Janis. Thank you. I think I'm more James May than Jeremy Clarkson, tbh.>>

lol - can i be the hamster?

[though i think that the fact that the first of your photos that I went to was the seafood platter would indicate that I'm more in the Clarkson mould.]

loved your descriptions and photos - they remind me of a long-ago family holiday in that area with my parents, which was the last time I ever made it north of Glasgow.

2 questions - can you post a link to the cottage, and where [roughly] in the South of England did you set off from?

Hi Ann,

I set off from the Herts/Essex border, about half way between London and Cambridge. Drive home from Ardaneaskan to Hertfordshire was 12 hrs 20 mins door to door (albeit with about 5 short stops). The traffic was very light coming back and even though a full days travel, wasn't tiring.

Oh what a wonderful report. I loved reading it.
It brought back so many good memories for me. I loved Plockton , and Isle of Skye.

I'm glad you got up towards Ullapool . Such a rugged beautiful area.

Your report was a joy to read. Thank you for sharing it .,

>>Also, the map got sucked out of the window at one point, though we ploughed on undeterred in true British ‘Scott of the Antarctic’ fashion.<<

Fantastic report and pictures! Thanks so much for posting.

Thanks for suggesting I read this. Doesn't sound like particularly scary driving. Loved the pictures.

We're going in September, so it was a real treat to see this wonderful report. The photos are wonderful!

We have one night in Lochinver and two in Gairloch. It doesn't seem nearly long enough!
