>>Depart in afternoon for Callander. Would you still suggest this for next 2 nights? <<
Definitely yes.
Balmoral doesn't fit and one can't really see much of it even if it is open to the public on the specific day they are in the area.

sugarmaple: Thanks for the advice on Aviemore! We have decided not to go that route and instead explore Fortingall! I have looked at Annfield Guest House - looks wonderful. What did you do during the day when you stayed in Callander. So many options, trying to narrow it down!
maitaitom: Wonderful - I have LOVED your trip report and photos. Looks like a great trip. I wish we had more time! Looking forward to reading about your time in St. Andrews.
Gordon_R: Well I hope we can find something nice at that budget then - thank you! If you have a any recommendations, Id love to hear!

We had two full days in Callander. On one day we went to Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, and as a concession to my daughters, we shopped at Primark. Not my preference, but they were keen to go. We spent way too much time there, and they managed to spend a few £.
The other day we went to Inchmahome Priory, Aberfoyle and Doune Castle. Not as busy as maitaitom is, but a good pace for us.
I really liked Callander, it's a charming little village.

With just two nights there you will need to be a bit selective. Sugarmaple's suggestions and maitaitom's descriptions in his trip report give you some good info.
The basics would be Stirling Castle, Doune Castle, Inchmahome Priory and a few lochs and waterfalls. You could drive out the the 'back side' Loch Lomond at Inversnaid.

Or take a trip on the Sir Walter Scott on Loch Katrine
