Nini : re moderately priced hotel in Edinburgh.

The Ibis which is part of a French chain is very central (next to the Royal Mile) & reasonably priced (£52.95 per room until the end of March). I've not stayed in the Edinburgh one but I've stayed in others & the rooms have always been simple but adequately equipped & very clean.

Two B&Bs owned by nice people I know slightly are http://www.aboutscotland.com/edin/albertterrace.html & http://www.pringlesingle.com/frameset.html). Both are in Morningside which is quite a nice area about a mile from the city centre, with good bus links to the centre. 1 Albert Terrace is a beautiful Georgian stone terrace house with views to the Pentlands. Pringle's Ingle is a Victorian sandstone house. Both are in very quiet streets.

Otherwise try searching the tourist board website (www.edinburgh.org).

Hi leonberger,
Thanks for your comments regarding choice of castles, Isle of Skye, the Heritage Pass (yes, they are great; used one in England a few yrs back) and B&Bs. I would be interested in knowing about the two B&Bs around Braemar. I looked for your trip report but couldn't find it. I looked under the 'key word' leonberger. Is it under something else? Your comments about people asking why you go back to Scotland sounds familiar. There are alot of people who do not travel, for various reasons, and can't equate with people who can hardly wait to get back on the road/plane/ship, especially if it's a return trip somewhere. We all have different interests and what's great and wonderful for some, is not the same for others. Then of course there are crazy examples like the guy who couldn't understand why my husband & I would want to go to Alaska on a cruise ship when he'd already been there while working on the tugs!

Hi Sheila,
Thanks for info on geneology. I did print one off a few weeks ago on 'Hebrides' Root websites and have also seen links when you click on Edinburgh Castle. You could easily spend all night on the computer going from one great link to another! Also met two people last night that gave me even more info for research. Will have to quit work to persue, me thinks!

To bc canuck,
Will E-mail you 'off forum', hopefully this weekend.

If you click on my name, you'll get a list of all my postings. About number 21 or so, you'll see "Trip Report Scotland/England September 2004" (or something very close to that).

At last, I found this for you:-

http://members.lycos.co.uk/hebrides/

Genealogy of the Uists. I did some research on this a year or so ago with my sister in law, whose family is from Berneray and a pal whose family live in Benbecula. If you want me to look it out, I will. Goodness knows where it is now.

Hi Gayle (leonberger),
I did find your trip report on my 2nd try and wrote down the names of B&Bs, eateries, etc. Thanks for a great report.

Hi Sheila,
I went on to the website you listed but couldn't see where you would be able to do some family history research. There are some great links and pictures so maybe I missed it. I'm also not quite sure what you were going to look up as far as the work you & your sister-in-law had worked on. Please let me know what you meant. You've been extremely helpful with our planning and other information so don't want you to be burning the midnight candle!

I'm so appreciative of this forum; it's really amazing and will certainly use it again for any future trips and also help others as I can.

Either I was knackered when I posted the link or I'm knackered now. Other than the links to ther sites I see no reason why I gave you that

On the research, we found a guy, in Harris, from memory, who specialises in helping people like you. But I'd struggle to find my notes on it now.

Hi Sheila,
Loved your E-mail! Please don't worry about looking up any family history. I'm just getting started again on my family tree after a few years, and am feeling a bit overwhelmed with information coming to me. Also, my mom (81) fell and broke her kneecap and also lost 2 front teeth so after a few visits (and more to come) to her doctor, hospital and dentist, and after an especially long day today, I am now going to sign off and get knackered. I'll have a toast to you as well!
