Hi,

Though I know reservations are hard to come by I'd like book a lunch or dinner at The Three Chimneys while on Skye on May. My home base will be the town of Portee and am wondering if anyone can give me any idea of how long the drive is from Portee to Colbost, Dunvegan.

I won't have car, so I'll need to take a cab. Has anyone made this journey? If so, how long did it take, much was it and was the meal worth the trip?

it is about 25 miles - and a local will drive it lickety split - probably about 35+ minutes. Have no idea how much the fare would be. But you probably can contract w/ a local driver to do it for a flat rate.

I would agree. Allow 45 minutes just in case of sheep.

I have not eaten at the Three Chimneys, but it is one of my outstanding ambitions. If you're not date sensitive go mid-week, it'll be easier getting a booking. I've never seen a bad review, and there was one in one of last weekend's papers- can't remember if it was the Scotsman, on Saturday, or Scotland on Sunday, which made it sound just as good as it ever was. They did say they couldn't taste the Drambuie in the custard, however.

I have been to the Three Chimneys for lunch several times and really like it.
The setting is beautiful, the food is excellent and the staff are pleasant and professional.
One word of warning is to book lunch for 12.30
It's one of those places where they don't try to chuck you out, so later lunchers might face delays.
While you are there, you might like to visit the Skye Silver shop just up the road.

Miss Prism-- it sounds like you live near(in?) Skye. Do you have any info on taxi rates?

Sorry, we live in England and so do not know about Skye taxi rates.
We have regular trips to Scotland, staying in a bothy on the Attadale Estate.

Even if you don't stay there, the gardens are worth a visit.
Anyway, when we are there, we like to pop over to Skye for the day.

We ate there about two years ago for lunch and loved it. The food was excellent, as was the service. It's in a very pretty, isolated spot but was raining when we were there - in summer - so we didn't hang around outside taking photos. We were staying in Portree and drove there, it did take a while but can't remember details.

Why not ask your B&B to book a local driver to take you there and pick you up as well? Or the restaurant may be able to suggest a driver to do that for you. It must happen a bit so people are able to have a few drinks with their lunch/dinner. The other thing I just thought of is your B&B will tell you how long it should take.
