Scheduling help - 3 days to fill in Paris-Lyons-Avignon trip
I'm planning a trip for April 2010:
6 nights in Paris, then renting a car to drive to Lyons (1 night), then onto a town near Avignon (7 nights),
We have 3 days free between our Avignon stay and our flight home from Paris.
What should we do? I'm wondering if we should drive to Nice area? Any other suggestions for destinations / hotels to stay?

Hi eco82 - I have been hunting around for the very same thing! Our departure from Paris in July has been delayed by 2 days. Seeing we are coming back in August I needed to find something different to take up our time and I think I have found just the thing! Hope it interests you too.

In Lyon, there are some art schools whose students do some very wonderful murals on the outside walls of buildings. There are several down by the river, across from the lower and upper cathedrals.
Also in Lyon is a very nice fountain, in the vicinity of the old Opera House.
Go across the river in Lyon, and visit the upper Cathedral, where you will find some beautiful mosaics inside. The upper cathedral is called Basilique de Fourvière, and is high up on a hill that overlooks the lower cathedral (Lyon Cathedral).
Not far from Nice is a very cool village with many artists, Saint-Paul de Vence. Very enjoyable place. We bought an original oil painting there and had it shipped back home.
There is a village we have not been to, but has rave reviews, Eze.
Then, of course, just travelling along the Cote d'Azur is fabulous.

Burgundy would be my choice.
I'll assume that you're driving to Lyon because you already have a car (you're from Europe), otherwise I sure would not want to drive out of Paris and then into Lyon. Take the TGV instead.
After Avignon, drive back to Burgundy & stay in either Beaune, Dijon, or one of the other villages and explore Burgundy. Visit the many chateaux in the area (there aren't many (if any) in Provence. Then dump the car in Dijon & take the TGV back to either Paris or directly to the CDG airport.
We've vacationed for 32 weeks on the Cote d'Azur & Provence (4 weeks in Burgundy & Beaujolais, plus another 1 1/2 years elsewhere in France). I have a 27 page itinerary that I've sent to a thousand or so Fodors people, that describes my favorite "stuff" in Provence & the Cote. E-mail me at [email protected] if you want a copy - but do so ASAP - we're leaving for Paris on Monday.

Have a great time in Paris. Elisabeth was up there this past week and absolutely loved the Renoir exhibit at the Grand Palais. You can buy tickets via the internet ahead of time.
Feel free to pop down on the TGV if you want a bit of sunshine. We'll be around !

I'd certainly recommend spending the extra 3 days around Nice. There is much to see and it's quite different from Provence. And April is a great time of year there. Weather typically very nice and the lack of tourist crowds is a blessing ! Look into dropping off your rental car and flying from Nice to Paris. Lots of cheap flights and will save a long drive back.

Thanks Chris66
For our stay in Paris, we've already booked a hotel... but funny, I've booked the Concortel! We're travelling with our baby so I've reserved the suite, which they gave me at a great rate of 210euros a night.
As for Burgundy, still in research mode, so your ideas give me a headstart. We're definitely doing some biking. Anyhow, will definitely ask your opinion. Thanks again
