The whole story is on here, somewhere. Basically, I was so busy telling the guy I knew what he was up to, I didn't notice him on the other side of me with his hand in my bag...

Good info on all the scams...

Last year saw pickpockets at Nice Ville train station

working the crowds... they usually work in gangs

travel.state.gov good site to review

rarely rental cars fall to the fake flat tire get robbed scam

Scariest new thing for me is Debit Card "skimming"

where good internet thieves can clean out all accounts

Only travel with CREDIT cards 0% liability and always

check them for bogus charges... one time got $150 K put

on one of my cards after my identity was stolen when they

got my PIN from a skimming machine..

Eventually paid 0 because it was a CC still a giant hassle.

Happy Travels!

•The same gas station had fallen victim to skimming a few months prior, costing victims thousands of ... such a station can bypass the risk of installing skimming machines ...

Ran into this last year in the South... also only use big bank

ATMs to be safe... smaller ATMs in remote areas have them too.

Rented a new Fiat Punto at Nice Airport in september 2011.
It did not have an automatic doorlocking system.
You need to push the button on the dash.

The car had a huge Europcar sticker on the back window. I was a Happy Driver indeed.
Fortunately nothing happened during this one week in the Provence.

Totally agree with Tulips to avoid unpopulated rest areas without petrol station, and at all cost after dawn.

the advice here in Australia re credit card skimming at ATM's is this. If you are using your right hand to punch in your pin then hold your left hand over the right hand so that a hidden device can't see the pin.

Re locking car doors, I do that most days as a precaution. I live in the suburbs of Sydney where I am fairly safe, but I'm happier with the doors locked.
